We love Jesus H. Obama as much as the next American, but the star-studded spectacle, “Obama: We Are One,” that aired this weekend on HBO was so schmaltzy, chicken fat actually oozed out of our cable box. Read on for cheestastic highlights. And don’t forget the crackers.
Cheesetriotic Moments
- Garth Brooks singing “American Pie” with the cowboy hat/headset combo.
- Actors explaining to us the significance of this moment in history.
- Tom Hanks singing along to Beyonce’s “America The Beautiful,” with his hand on his heart.
- Bald Eagles cut out of the broadcast because they were trying to escape to freedom.
- Marissa Tomei.
- The Lincoln Memorial being made to resemble the set of The Price Is Right with gliding podiums.
- George Lopez token Latino.
- Steve Carrell being reverent.
- Jamie Foxx being funny.
- Joe Biden not understanding how microphones work and yelling at the top of his lungs instead. (This was actually hilarious.)
- The continual blurring of the lines between actual important things and entertainment.

I believe the little girl sleeping is Suhaila Ng, Obama’s niece.
I saw some of the concert and Pachanga is right, it did require a heaping helping of mayonesa and chile. I have a feeling this cornball concert will rerun a lot so I will probably stay away from HBO until Flight of the Conchords starts back up.
