Former member of the Puerto Rican Senate Jorge De Castro Font (former because he was arrested in October by the FBI) pleaded guilty yesterday to 21 charges of fraud and conspiracy. De Castro Font admitted that from Jan. 2, 2005, through August 2008, he "directly and indirectly solicited [...] approximately $525,000 in cash payments and other benefits, such as campaign contributions in excess of the legal limits, lodging, private flights, meals and other things of value, from individuals." De Castro Font also admitted he did things like proposing or blocking legislation and persuading other legislators to vote for or against said legislation on behalf of the folks who gave him all that nice stuff. Oh and also, he sort of pressured people to do stuff and made them feel like he'd use his political power to harm them economically if they didn't. Seems, change has not come to Puerto Rico. YET! But now that Barack's in office, everyone is magically confessing all their dark shit, so buck up, PR. The remaining 11 charges were dismissed while prosecution recommended a sentence of 9-11 years. U.S. District Judge Francisco Augusto Besosa in the District of Puerto Rico set a sentencing hearing for Apr. 23, 2009.
