dr_eugenia_calleProminent cancer researcher Dr. Eugenia “Jeanne” Calle, 57, was found murdered in her midtown Atlanta condo.

Police have arrested a 27-year-old man named Jamal Thompson on suspicion that he may he responsible for her death.

Dr. Calle, who was engaged and in the process of moving in with her fiance, spearheaded several major studies dealing with cancer, including a study that linked the disease to obesity. This research, in fact, led to an interview with Calle on “6o Minutes.” Her death is being described by her colleagues as the loss of “a great scientist.” Here’s the interview:

Investigators had looked into whether a prospective buyer for Calle’s luxury apartment may have been the culprit in her murder. Her body was discovered by her fiance about 12-16 hours after death as a result of blunt force trauma to the head.

Authorities do not currently know why Mr. Thompson killed Dr. Calle, who had been director of Analytic Epidemiology for the American Cancer Society since 1994. Nor, barring being an aforementioned prospective buyer, do they know how he was able to gain access into the apartment, as there was no sign of forced entry. They intend on reviewing security video for answers.
