beverlyeckert21309A Continental Airlines commuter plane that crashed last night around 10 PM in suburban Buffalo killed 49 passengers including a September 11th widow named Beverly Eckert.
Eckert, whose husband Sean Rooney was killed during the September 11th attacks in 2001, continued to live in Stamford, Connecticut in the home she shared with her husband, a high school sweetheart.

Eckert, who met President Obama only six days earlier at a special event for victim’s families in Washington, D.C., was headed to Buffalo to meet her sister and celebrate what would have been her husband’s 58th birthday. She was also going to take part in the presentation of a scholarship established in honor of him at Canisius High School, where the two met.

Eckert was part of a group of September 11th widows, mothers and children who became amateur lobbyists, forcing lawmakers to pass sweeping reforms of U.S. Intelligence apparatus in 2004. The 34 seat Bombardier Q400 took off from Newark, New Jersey headed for Buffalo last night and crash landed on a house in Clarence Center, New York about 20 miles northeast of Buffalo at 10:20 PM, killing one person inside the house.

I already felt bad about the crash; this extra information about one of the passengers makes it almost too tragic to bear.

Apparently there were also two more plane crashes this week in Brazil… Amtrak, anyone?

This is sad. It reminds me of a book I read called Replacement Child by Judy L. Mandel. Its a memoir she wrote from a plane that crashed into her house, killing a sister she never knew and badly burning her other sister.
I personally liked this book and thought it was fitting when I saw this article.
