Guanabee’s SXSW 2009 Latin Artist Picks: Niña Dioz Tops Our List

ninadioz21309 The 2009 SXSW showcase schedules went live today and we thought we’d spend the better part of our day trolling through the Latin acts to see who looks good. By Latin we only mean they have a Latin surname and don’t necessarily play “Latin music” as such. We’re essentially shackling them with Latino baggage. Work it out in your music, artists.

Some trends we noticed: There are a shitload of acts from Brazil and some really exciting hip-hop acts from Monterrey, Mexico. The artist we’re most itching to see? Niña Dioz. This Northern Mexican hip-hop artist has been generating major buzz on the indie circuit for the past year which reminds us a lot of the Lady Sovereign craze that swept SXSW three years ago. The only difference is that Niña hasn’t even put out her first album yet. She does have a killer 7-song EP called Marcapasos, though, and as her MySpace status tells us a forthcoming album should be expected, “very fucking soon,” you can bet that those who attend her SXSW showcase will be able to say they witnessed the birth of a star.

Another Monterrey hip-hop show not to be missed is the Austin debut of Pato Machete formerly of Control Machete and now a solo act. He is rumored to be showcasing with Mexican Institute of Sound, so we will be bribing whoever we have to in order to get there. Hello, Camilo…? [UPDATE: We just heard from MIS' label, Nacional Records, that he won't be making it to the festival. Pato Machete is still scheduled to play.] Other hot acts include Colombia’s Bomba Estéreo, Austin’s own Brownout!, (which is comprised of Grupo Fantasma’s horn section and WILL have you shaking your ass) and, oh hell, they’re all really good. Just look around at the list below and find something you like.

Hey. Great Freakin List! Little bit in love with Nina Dioz now.

I put it up on our site all fancy style: http://do512.com/sxsw2009/guanabee/bands - with audio/video/reviews and such. Once parties and showcases start rolling out they’ll all be there too.

Hit me up with any questions and so I can put you on the list for our parties.

  4. i also like ceci bastida, but i have yet to check her out live! i think this is her 3rd yr in a row playing in my hometown of the zombie sign hackers.

Monica Giraldo is a great new Latin artist. She was nominated for a Grammy and has won a couple of Billboard awards. She is playing at the SXSW at The Copa on Saturday at Midnight.
