The U.S. Senate confirmed Hilda Solis as Secretary of Labor yesterday! And it only took six weeks of looking into the negligent taxes on her husband’s business and deliberating about whether or not she has enough management experience. In the end, the bi-partisan vote was 80-17 in favor of allowing a brown woman into an American President’s cabinet. And with the unemployment rate being what it is, this particular post is going to be one hot seat for the next four years.
The 51 year-old Solis is also the first person of Central American heritage to be appointed to a senior post in a cabinet level department. She was sworn in at a private ceremony last night and already at work today. Solis’ working class upbringing and Senate record would suggest that she will focus great attention on protecting health and safety for the worker and enforcing wage and hour laws. She’s also said she’ll increase job retraining for the unemployed.
