jessica_elle1Jason Wu, the man who designed Michelle Obama’s inaugural ball gown, is completely taken with Jessica Alba. Upon noting, with surprise, that the slim and well-proportioned woman in front of him very recently gave birth, he asks, incredulously, “Wait. Didn’t she just have a baby?” The question prompts Alba’s Elle interview to say, “Take that, blogosphere!” The writer refers to the recent “controversy” over the actress’ retouched Campari photos.

Kablam, you got us. A fawning designer complimenting an actress in a fashion magazine totally makes her shoot unretouched. The entire interview in Elle’s March 2009 highlights this unique love/hate relationship the media and the public have with Jessica Alba. The writer declares that Jessica seems to “provoke a particularly virulent strain of jealous venom.” But, we wonder, is it jealousy?

One paragraph down, the interviewer mentions that Jessica’s star-making turn in “Darn Angel” propelled her to fame based, in part, on how awesome she looked fighting crime while clad in skin-tight black leather. He acknowledges that, while her sex symbol status has “rankled” Jessica, her subsequent choices in movie roles have done very little to change this perception.

And it’s this attitude - expecting support and adoration without trying to at least meet your fan base halfway - is what “rankles” us. We don’t really have an opinion on Jessica, really. We think she’s very pretty and not very talented and has a tendency to seem ungrateful and lacking in charm in interviews. But maybe her life is secretly very hard. Maybe she’s prone to terrible, day-ruining flatulence. Point is: We don’t care. But we do really abhor having to constantly write about this woman. Not only because she’s expected to be some sort of role model for Latinas, but also because it’s just sort of tiresome to rehash the same story about Jessica Alba being grumpy or complaining about public perception or holding in a fart for too long or blah, blah. Anyway: Gorgeous shoot, Elle. But we still don’t care ’bout Jessica.

From now on, every time I see a picture of Jessica Alba, I will picture her trying to hold in a fart.
