Joaquin Phoenix Visits David Letterman, Makes An Awko Taco

jp_on-lettermanAwko taco! Joaquin Phoenix appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman with crusty, itchy, twitchy results. His appearance was disheleved, his speech was slurred and he seemed either bored or slightly homicidal throughout the entire interview. And? We loved every moment.

Here’s the thing: We strongly suspect Joaquin and Letterman are both in on the joke. Talk shows are really transparent and formulaic in their obvious prompts and thinly-veiled attempts to act as if this was a chat between friends instead of a vehicle to promote celebrities’ projects. Either that, or Joaquin is on ALL kinds of drugs.

Watch and decide:

Am I the only one that thinks he looks kinda hot? I dont really care for what he is doing but there is just something about his new look that catches me eye.

    • No, you’re not alone. I’m definitely feeling the beard + suit.

    • He looks hotter because the beard obscures his hairlip.

      • Bwaha!

You know, I actually kind of like stuff like hairlips or busted-ass teeth (not to be confused with busted ass-teeth - those I don’t like).

        hahaha maybe thats it!
I’m not usually attracted to guys with the beards and crazies, its just gross.. like when brad pit was sportin the beard a while back he lookd straight up fug. or like that one guy, I can’t remember names(wtf)…. Goldie hawn’s daughters baby daddy. He was sportin that when they were together and he lookd all kinds of nasty.

  2. I saw that last night and found Joaquin just awful. I don’t know what the intent of that whole thing was, but I’d made me never want to know anything about him again. Does he think today’s society finds his “irreverent” behavior interesting? Is his new found “darkness” suppose to intrigue anybody?

Joaquin, you did a movie with Mel Gibson about aliens and faith, so like, take it down a notch. Oh but I can’t wait to hear his hip hop record he keeps talking about. It’s gonna be like Kfeds Poo Po Zao song.

I don’t think that was a set-up between the two of them. It looks like Joaquin has fired his publicist (not to mention his barber), and it’s kinda fascinating to watch a “star” on a talk show when he’s not following the script. But hats off to Letterman, who is such a pro that he can turn a train wreck into something funny and fascinating.

Joaquin seems to be on a mission to show the public how stupid we are to care so much about celebrity by punking us in the process. The award winning actor Joaquin disavows his acting career, dresses up like lost member of ZZ top, and decides to move his career in the direction of Hip Hop, all the while appearing to be on a constant drip of morophine. Yet, he still gets booked on Letterman and people pay to see him perform his “hip hop” and blogs/gossip columns etc. track his every move—-even if the “celebrity” is offering us nothing (which at the moment he is not–his music sucks, his conversation skills suck, and most likely his hygiene is questionable) he is offering us crap and we are eating it up. His celebrity status makes him interesting to the all consuming “public” so –he is on a mission to point out how stupid we are (as a public) to elevate people like him, and others with far less talent, the glory we do, especially when they are offering us nothing in return. Or he has had a schizophrenic breakdown.

Patrick - right on. It just goes to show you how stupid the mainstream US is. People will buy junk and lots of it. Although incidious, its funny as hell. Whatever stimulates this economy is ok with me.

So now that he is going to be a rapper, he can’t wash his hair nor groom his beard.
Also, this is a total hoax and it’s totally being done for publicity.

You dont need to wash your hair or trim your beard to be a rapper. You need to know how to rap - which he don’t. He had dreds on - dont confuse the two. Wether or not it was planned, I think its funny that people are THAT concerned about him… as if I care… he sure dont.

Wow. My jaw dropped; first at the awkwardness of the situation and then at people’s oblivious and callous comments. I don’t think it’s a hoax. I think Joaquin is obviously in some altered state, whether it is a mental health issue or drug-related issue, it seemed quite inappropriate that the entire audience laughed at this man who seems to me to be in some kind of emotional trouble.
Please remember that we first watched as this young man lost his big brother to a very public death by drug overdose. Then we all came to know and love him as hugely talented actor in his own right. Now, as he is clearly going through something profound, you’re simply going to ridicule him on you tube and cast him into the village idiot file? Shame on you!
Here’s what I’d like to know: Didn’t anyone at the David Letterman show have any verbal contact with him before throwing him on the stage? They probably saw he had issues and just saw it as an opportunity to cash in on a human being’s problems. They made a joke out of him when they should have rescheduled him for later date. After what happened to his brother, they probably should have gotten him some medical attention.
Shame on David Letterman and his producers for capitalizing on Joaquin and shame on you for perpetuating the spectacle.

I agree completely. I thought David Letterman was completely rude and was hoping for some crazy reaction to increase ratings. He never listened to Joaquin and cut him off mid sentence. So rude.

I totally agree with 5th guest up. we praise people when they`re on top, but as soon as someone falls, people can`t wait to point fingers & put in their 2 cents. I have followed Joaquins` work since he basically started acting & have always loved him. If there is something wrong with him mentally or otherwise, i wish him the best of luck & hope that he turns himself around, or if this is really the last movie we`ll see of his than i am saddened by that, but will look forward to listen to his music. If music is what he wants to do,then i think everyone needs to shut their mouths & give him a chance to show what he can do. I do however know one thing, if his cd sounds
as good as he did on Walk The Line then i will definitely buy his cd.
For now, people need to shut their mouths & stop crucifying the guy for being a human being. So what if he doesn`t live his life thru your expectations, at least he isn`t hurting anyone, he wants to make a dream of his come to life & who the hell are we to judge him.
At least he has the balls the do something about his dreams.People just need to stop bashing him & realize that there are bigger things in the world to worry about. I have always loved Joaquin & will continue to do so.

I think Patrick has the right take on this.Letterman’s people schedule who is hot right now and have no obligation to get him anything.if he can’t take care of his business he will be right at home with Chris Brown and all the other hip-hop artists who move in the same circle.

Isn’t Chris in Jail for being a panzy woman beater? Dont equate the two. Why did you even waste the 11 spaces of precious web space to post his name? Joaquin may be in a funky time, going through some personal crap, or even just messing around because he can, but he aint no sissyassed pig that cant control his own limbs. Anyone that raises his hand against a woman is no man. There are many more creative ways win an arguement.

Casey Afleck is following him around with a camera crew making a documentry about his rise as a hip hop star, so in my opinion I think this is all a spoof and everyone seems to be falling for it. If this is by chance real….well then there goes another good acting talent.
