Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grose Emailed His Friends A White House Watermelon Picture
25 February 2009, 5:45 PM. By Cindy Casares
We’re sure we’re being kneejerk liberals here, but the Mayor of Los Alamitos, California Dean Grose has emailed to all his friends what we would call a racist image–a picture of the White House with a lawn full of watermelons and a caption that reads, “No Easter egg hunt this year.” Happy Ash Wednesday, America!
What’s really funny is how this faux pas came to light. The OC Register reports that the Mayor sent it from his personal email account to a group that included at least one black person, Keyanus Price, who was appalled:
She responded to the e-mail with: “Hey, that’s not nice at all. Not all black people like watermelon… you should know better than that.”
Grose replied: “The way things are today, you gotta laugh every now and then. I wanna see the coloring contests.”
HA! Can you imagine trying to dunk those big things inside a cup full of PAAS? Hilarity. Once Price turned Grose’s email over to the City Council and, presumably, the press, Grose sent her an email apology that was Murdochian in its effectiveness. “It was just poor judgment on my part, and I am deeply sorry. It wasn’t meant to hurt her,” he said. Do racists ever admit to malice? Like when they hang a guy from a tree, do they still say they didn’t mean to hurt him? We’re just curious.
Price has asked for a public apology from Grose, but as one internet commenter remarked upon seeing the picture:
Obviously the email was a reference to certain agricultural policies of the Obama administration and their impact on California melon growers…some people are so touchy. If it makes you feel any better, I’m sure Mayor Grouse will apologize for you being so thin-skinned.

Mayor Grose probally is one of thousand of white folks who believe black poeple should never have left the white man’s plantation. It never was in the scheme of things for black people to be nothing but slaves. It was not out of goodness of the old white slave master’s heart or some signing the Emancipation Proclamation. Which did not free the slaves. Some white folks stripe have not changed. America needs to revist history. Again it never was in the scheme of things for black men, women, and children to be notthing but slaves in America. Ginny
