Oh Miley. Don’t You Know Making Fun Of Asians Is So Last Year?
2 February 2009, 5:10 PM. By Alex Alvarez
Miley Cyrus is always ever so slightly behind the times. She’s been wearing Iron Maiden t-shirts despite that being oh my god SOOOO seventh grade! And now she’s been photographed making a “slanty-eyed” pose even though it was all the rage among racists last year.
Miley does manage to spice her photo up by including an actual Asian Friend®. Which makes it totally ok, right?
Check out the full photo:
Well this party looks fuuuun! We can’t remember the last time we sat on our boyfriend’s lap with a big, nasty blanket while making ostensibly racially insensitive faces and gestures that would soon be uploaded onto the internet, thus ensuring that our record sales as an internationally known recording artist might be put in jeopardy. We mean, not since college at least!
It’s no surprise at this point that Miley does not make the wisest decisions when it comes to photographs / the internet, but come on. Miley, seriously?
We’re also kind of tired of the “Well my friend is ____ and he’s ok with it / isn’t offended / thinks it’s funny.” Sure, not everyone is offended by every racial caricatures or epithets. It doesn’t make you look like anything other than an insensitive jerk living in her own bubble-world, though. Unwise, Destiny Hope Cyrus. Most unwise.

G-Bee, you’re making it really difficult to enjoy this new post-racial era when you insist on pointing out people being racist or culturally insensitive. People are just trying to have fun.
*sarcasm*
Also, Mileys boyfriend is just guilty of a little statutory rape, no biggie. Fun.
*not sarcasm*
She should come party with the students at Tulane Law School. No more yanky my wanky. The Donger need food.
All these accusations of racism make me afraid that the next time I have a wicked eye ache at a party someone’s gonna take a picture of me trying to rub them out then, boom, here I am on Guanabee being called an asshole by all its readers. Geez. I’m gonna have to wear sunglasses everywhere. You can start calling me B Diddy.
Now, now. We didn’t call Miley a racist. We just pointed out that she seems to be making a racist gesture. Is there a difference? An argument can certainly be made either way.
The only thing we’ve accused Miley of being is dumb. We’ve also said she has big, giant veneers.
I think I’m more offended by the chine.. uh, fili.. er, thai… the oriental dude who didn’t smack the whole row of them.
That’s their toke Asian friend who they refer to when they defend their actions in this picture. “oh, don’t worry, my Asian friend was there. He laughed, so it’s okay.”
1. I think this pic is clearly meant to be satirical. Miley and her friends KNOW they are being potentially offensive, that’s why her asian friend is making a WTF face to highlight that fact. It’s like - let’s all try to look asian and you look all pissed cause we’re being so racist! That is a funny concept despite the potential for quick to be offended bloggers to take it the wrong way.
2. The real reason they even thought of this is because they are all stoned out of their minds and that state frequently leads to one’s eyes being squinty (note that most aren’t even holding their eyes back).
3. You DID insinuate that Miley was racist - “And now she’s been photographed making a “slanty-eyed” pose even though it was all the rage among racists last year.”
Mais non, my sweet. I wrote that racists did it last year, thus setting a trend, and Miley is doing it now, when it’s unfashionable. Two separate groups. Much like how wearing an Iron Maiden shirt doesn’t automatically equate to being a metal head.
I think “clearly meant to be satirical” is your interpretation and how exactly do you know they KNEW they were being politically offensive? The scenario you drew up is possible, just without substantive evidence, is completely hearsay. Also, the Asian guy’s look does not look like a “WTF you guys are all racist” nor does the position of the subjects in the photo suggest they are trying to make a satirical photograph criticizing the racial politics of America. But hey, that’s just my interpretation, I’m not going to post it like it’s a proven fact, like some people.
