Nadya Suleman Has Three Disabled Children, Receives Welfare. Her Frustrated Mother Speaks Out.
10 February 2009, 9:45 AM. By Alex Alvarez
“OctoMom” Nadya Suleman’s publicist (of course) has revealed that, despite Nadya telling Ann Curry that she does not receive welfare or other monetary aid, Suleman receives $490 a month in food stamps and receives federal assistance for her three disabled children.
She is just barreling towards that Mom of the Year commemorative mug, huh? Chuck E. better snatch that poor child and RUN. Her publicist stops at describing how it is that her children are disabled, but dlisted’s Michael K has a guess: ”Um. I think their disability is having a crazy bitch from a mommy.” Yup. That’ll keep a womb troll down and out for a long, long time.
Suleman, when previously asked how she will provide for 14 children, said that she was convinced God would “provide a way.” Apparently that way exists in the form of your tax dollars. The publicist, Michael Furtney, said Suleman does not consider food stamps or federal assistance welfare: ”In Nadya’s view, the money that she gets from the food stamp program … and the resources disabilities payments she gets for her three children are not welfare. They are part of programs designed to help people with need, and she does not see that as welfare.” Kind of like how sex doesn’t count when its with a wombat. Right?
Helpful hints: Another fun service that is provided to people in need is low-cost birth control and - now this is totally free - Not Getting Fertility Treatments Done. It’s worth checking out.
That way we see it, family planning is often seen as a personal choice, based on issues like religion, income level, culture, etc. But, at some point, an individual’s decision to have children begins to impact other people. And, as it stands, Nadya does not seem to be attempting to enter the workforce anytime soon. We’ve learned that she wants to purse a Masters Degree in counseling “at some point” - which means at least another few years in which she won’t be working to support her kids - and that she received a settlement after suffering a spinal injury at her previous job. Which, one would assume, means she is disabled on some level and cannot work certain jobs.
Do you think Nadya is abusing a system created to help people who have run out of alternatives? Or is she as entitled to government aid as any other single parent with kids to feed and no job with which to do it?
To further complicate this story, Suleman’s mother - who previously claimed, publicly, how happy the family was to have these new children - is now coming forward saying that she and her husband talked to doctors in order to stop Nadya from pursing in vitro treatments yet again: ”Her dad and I were talking to her doctor so he would not do this again. He did promise and he kept his promise. However she went somewhere else and had this last in vitro done again which resulted in octuplets.”

social welfare: governmental provision of economic assistance to persons in need
from wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn
Persons in need, with need, same difference. While I don’t think anybody should be telling anybody else how to plan their families or whatever, I think her parents didn’t spank her enough as a kid, or yell at her enough as an adult, or something. Parent fail.
I’m trying my hardest not to judge her, but I can’t help but question her thinking in having so many children.
I am so scared about having kids. They are a lot of responsibility, way more than my cat. I am also scared of being responsible for another human being whose identity will be formed b/c of me. Yeah, pretty scary.
I’m not trying my hardest not to judge her…she crazy!
she is a person that likes to bleed the system and knows damn well how to. If she claimed to have been disabled by injury how was she able to have so many pregnancies to this date. If she had spinal injury it makes no sense to me to get pregnant so many times and even worse to get pregnant with 6. If i was a doctor i would take all this into consideration. Not a darn thing wrong with her back. Great gamble she took to burden the single parents that actually do work and do not qualify for welfare or any state funded program. I hope all america enjoys forking out the 3mil to pay for her 8 childrens hospital stay, i sure as hell don’t since i do have private insurance that comes out of my paycheck. Also paying daycare, welfare, food stamps, medicaid and all other state funded programs. Your welcome Nadya and the doctor responsible. I work now, and at times two jobs not in the near future when i get my education. i am so upset.
Her parents fucked up in raising her. She is just crazy as fuck and they didn’t get her help that she needs. Now we’re stuck with Octomom on public assistance who’s also getting her face cut to look like goddamn Angelina Jolie.
You couldn’t write this shit. She’s slow as all hell.

Following my own observations about opinions, I’ve been biting my tongue on the backlash of opinions being shared the world over about this mother of 14. I’ve been waiting to finalize my thoughts until we had a chance to hear directly from the horse itself, so to speak. Finally, Dateline has given us the opportunity to hear from Ms. Suleman herself.
Having listened to the interview it’s difficult to keep one’s opinions quiet. While I have opinions about her already having 6 children and not being married and then adding to her family, I don’t think it’s my place or anyone else’s to make judgments. But I stop cold when I learn that she has NO INCOME and is living off food stamps, student loans, disability and the goodness of her parents. (Interestingly, her own mother’s interview certainly comes off as though they share the world’s disgust.) It’s not as though this was some accident, Ms. Suleman chose to have IVF and to keep all 8 babies.
Listening to Ms. Suleman speak about providing both emotionally and financially for her brood, it becomes quite clear that she isn’t living in reality. Without dissecting the selfish reasons for which she chose to have so many children or the risks she took of leaving her first six without a mother, I’ll stick to the financial and emotional issues.
How can one think that her decision to have these children is anything short of emotional and financial ignorance? Given that she lives with her parents, where there are a total of 9 people crammed into 1,500 sq. ft. of space, how does she expect to cram another 8 into that space? This is certainly not fair to the children or her parents; and one has to question whether that many people in that space is even healthy.
In reading the financial analysis of the basic costs of diapering, feeding, and transporting to doctors and eventual childcare costs alone, it is obvious that without government assistance or relying on donations she is not capable of providing for these children. Some have compared her to Angelina Jolie (both for looks and desire to have a large brood). Here’s the difference as I see it…Angelina and Brad can afford to provide for their children as well as afford to secure the additional help that it takes to raise such a large family – not to mention the fact that they are providing homes for existing homeless children.
Even if companies and people step up to help (for the benefit of the children – not because of her), her ability to provide the emotional and physical attention these children will need and deserve is highly questionable. We don’t let people have obscene quantities of cats, dog or pets in a home that is not equipped to handle them. It appears as though cramming that many people in the existing home borders on the same obscenity. A home of 1,569 sq. ft. divided by 17 people provides a total of 92.3 sq. foot per person!
No one wants these kids to suffer. Yet how do we as a society help provide for these children’s needs without reinforcing this woman’s selfish indulgence and encouraging others to act so irresponsibly?
I strongly support her even with her decision on having a lot of children. I’m sure she has her own reasons to do this. Maybe she thought about her disability and her spinal injury and she thought that one day it might get worse or something and she won’t be able to have any kids!!!
Some love babies more than others. And everyone….wake up, no one will go through the pain and hassle and THE PAIN of pregnancy and delivery just to get help and money??? It doesn’t make sense because there are easier ways of getting help. And What she went through is major, this lady is not selfish because if she is she would have left her kids or gave them or anything like other people. She refused to give up on any of her babies. I’m sure she is a good mom.
She deserves to be helped and she deserves to be famous or popular. We worry about our bodies and our shapes as women. And we stay away a lot of times from breast feeding or getting pregnant just to stay in shape, Nadya didn’t care, she cared about the babies more than her self.
She is a beautiful lady and that doesn’t mean that she is trying to look like Angelina. People make me sick of the way they think. Who cares about looking like an actress while being pregnant with 6, 7, or 8 babies?? This lady suffered during her pregnancy, yes she certainly did.
If she was planning on being like Angelina she would’ve adopted babies. Anyways, what ever her reasons are we should support and help the babies. They are innocent and they are lucky to have such a loving mom.
I am in great shock about this issue. This lady is sick, and she needs mental help. She can’t raise 14 children on her own, not withous a job, or partner to support her. Of course we will be picking up the bill when she gets to welfare program, but I think the doctor that implemented those embryos into her should pay for the children’s expenses, for as long they live. Shame on him, and on the mom, beacuse at the end, kids will suffer. She just wanted attention in her life, which in this case parents failed to provide to her. Let’s just hope that none of these 8 will not be disabled, as the 3 she already have.
She does have a back problem. And she was in bed for 6 weeks. Imagine being in her place???!!!!
Give her a brake!
Please having back problem and doing this come on you must be joking .She must be a bitch . Welfare should do background check on her and take the kids from her and give them to foster parents.
Wow! I tried IVF. First time it did not work and the second time it did. I have one child. IVF is very expensive. My husband and I paid for it by ourselves. With “Octomom” not having any income I wonder how she paid for the treatments. Iam ashamed of the docotor who implanted her with these little cluster of cells. Iam a nurse and that doctor knew very well he was putting her at the ultimate risk! Not to mention the possibility of leaving the other children motherless. I do not understand the sense in this. I pray for her and the family. I hope everything works out for her and all the beautiful children she has wating for her at homeand to the ones she was able to give birth to. The IVF doctor should be in serious trouble for experimenting with these women who come to them for honest help! Heather from WC Pa desperatetaleavingotorsllssse…..sttohms
Hi she is on welfare the doctor who did the procedure should done a background check on her , Living on welfare and having 14 children the doctor responsability to take care of the children as he was the one who did the procedure .That will be a lesean for the rest of the doctors .
The government should intervene and take the children from her and give them to foster care
In the democracy we call America, we are free to choose how many children we wish to bear/adopt. Married, unmarried, employed or not. I gathered that she expect one or two kids tops from this IVF (as w/ the others). So what if she had 7 or 8 kids? It happens, all the time, across America to single, unemployed mothers (usually w/ mutiple “fathers.” ) Her intent was noble, to “use up” her fertilized eggs. She may suffer from Pollyanna-itus, but does that entitle the entire MSM to persecute any ONE individual. And we expect our kids not to bully others in school? If she proves to be unable to adquately care for her children, I am sure the State will follow proper protocol. Until then, the public persecution needs to stop. I find that more alarming than her choice to refuse selective reduction.
If you ignore all the other facts in this situation you can’t ignore the $5 million it will cost me as a California tax-payer for the hospital charges alone. (Something she wasn’t prepared to pay for whether it was 1 or 8 children.) You also can’t ignore that as tax-payers we will likely end up paying millions over the life span of these additional 8 children for their disabilities and public aid. When the exercise of her “free choice” bulges over into my pocketbook, particularly with full knowledge of her own lack of resources over and over again, I believe I have a right to object. Ones rights end where another’s nose begins. http://musings-out-loud.blogspot.com/
