More Information On Nadya Suleman, The Mother Of Octuplets

More info has come out concerning Nadya Suleman, the woman who recently gave birth to octuplets. What started out as a heartwarming and vagina-melting tale of motherhood is quickly turning into a story about a dysfunctional family. Nadya Suleman is 33 years old and, as we mentioned previously, is living with her parents in California. Pictured at left is her father, Edward. Now news has come out that the six children she had before giving birth to her octuplets are all products of fertility treatments and that she wanted to undergo treatment one last time in order to have "just one more daughter." Nadya, who is still recovering from the birth in hospital, is now in the midst of a bidding war to determine which television show will score a first interview with her. She is rumored to be in talks with Oprah Winfrey, Diane Sawyer and Katie Couric. Reports say she is currently asking for 2 million dollars for her story.  Suleman's mother, Angela, says the sperm used for her daughter's latest pregnancy was donated, and that Nadya has no partner or source of income. She lives with her parents, who live together despite being divorced. Angela has recently been forced to file for bankruptcy as a result of caring for Nadya and her six other grandchildren. Angela admits her daughters multiple pregnancies may be the result of a mental illness:

She is not evil, but she is obsessed with children.  She loves children, she is very good with children, but obviously she overdid herself. It can’t go on any longer. She’s [already] got six children and no husband. I was brought up the traditional way. I firmly believe in marriage. But she didn’t want to get married.

Angela Suleman says her daughter has been "obsessed" with the idea of having children since she was a teenager but could not because her "fallopian tubes were plugged up." All 14 of her daughter's children are the result of the same sperm donor, a neighbor of the family's. Nadya herself got a divorce one year ago from a man named Marco Gutierrez , but he is not thought to have fathered any of her children. Instead, the name "David Solomon" appears on the birth certificates for her eldest four. Doctors were requested not to reveal any information about Nadya - including the fact that she had undergone fertility treatments in order to conceive. The fact that she was single, living with her parents and already mother to six children all came out in the days soon following the octuplets' birth, supposedly revealed to the media by a family friend. Perhaps someone was a little tired of watching this family completely implode?   We wonder if Nadya Suleman's situation will have any impact on single mothers who wish to undergo treatments to become pregnant on their own. Are background and home checks done for those who wish to conceive through sperm donors, as is done with adoption and foster care?
