Philippa Curtis Jailed For Texting While Driving. This Is Why We Stick To Walkie-Talkies
3 February 2009, 10:08 AM. By Alex Alvarez
Philippa Curtis, the 21-year-old British woman who killed a fellow motorist while she was busy texting and driving, is facing jail time for her crime.
That’s her heading into court, on the phone, pictured at left.
Philippa, you might recall, had exchanged over 20 texts before crashing into the back of victim Victoria McBryde’s stationery car. She has been sentenced to 21 months in prison.
The judge trying her case expressed hope that Philippa’s sentencing might serve as a wake-up call for “young people” who multi-task while on the road:
I want to get across to people of your generation that driving is a skill which needs 100 per cent concentration and to use a mobile phone while driving is folly. The message I want to give out is to use a mobile phone is madness.
We’d venture to say that this is a problem that extends beyond people of Philippa’s (our) generation. We’ve witnessed plenty of older people talking on the phone while driving and applying mascara, or eating a delicious breakfast burrito, or going through files, or giving / receiving road head. Our solution?
Be more like Latinos. This is, in fact, our solution for everything.
Why not try walkie-talkies? Or drivey-talkies - those hands-free earpieces that make you look like a complete and utter crazy person in public. You can use it to convey important messages that would otherwise have to be shared by texting. Things like, “LOL” and “wut r u wring?” and “No mames.”
Philippa, for her part, defends her actions by saying she should have, perhaps, slowed down while texting but that texting while driving is ok under the right conditions. She then said that she had sent so many texts the night of the accident because she was feeling “hyper” that night. Mmm hmm.
This is another example of how Philippa could have benefited from taking a cue from Latinos. If we claimed that the actions that caused us to kill a person were ok “under the right conditions” or happened because we were “feeling hyper,” our dead grandmother would have descended from heaven with her chancleta and promptly smacked us in front of God and the judge and everyone.
