salma-hayekSalma Hayek has been guest starring on NBC’s “30 Rock” as Elisa, a Puerto Rican woman caring for Jack Donaghy’s (Alec Baldwin) elderly mother. Her role introduces new and wondrous sitcom hijinx and allows mainstream audiences to get a look at what life is like for Latinos. We’ve chosen three different scenes from her appearance to showcase how Elisa and Jack’s buddy, cross-cultural relationship serves as an effective teaching tool in promoting tolerance and understanding. Cue slide whistle.

In this first clip, Elisa’s grandmother gives Jack the cold shoulder because he reminds her of someone. Someone nefarious (Dun dun dunnnn!):

Old Hispanic ladies! So small, so round, so incapable of separating real life from fiction. The next clip paints a slightly less accurate picture of Latinos:

Hm. This clip is sort of mixed. Do we all love our big, boisterous, extended family? False. Do we love getting drunk in public parks? Es verdad.

Finally, this last clip shows that we have a strong relationship to our religion - Threats of Violence. Ism:

Oh white people, what with their jobs and dinner plans. Lighten up, compadres, and join our earthy, sexy neverending parade of joy and tapas.

Of course, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention that “30 Rock,” like all sitcoms, garners laughs by painting highly dramatic and satirical portraits of easily-recognizable stereotypes. For example: Tracy Morgan’s character, Tracy Jordan, is a caricature of a certain type of black man in the media, what with his entourage and excessive spending habits. (Then again, this might just be a caricature of Tracy Morgan himself, who is pretty much a slightly less cartoonish version of Bugs Bunny.) Kenneth the Southern NBC page is also presented as a stereotype of the polite, Southern good boy. And Liz Lemon is just your typical White Lady, what with her constant snacking and baby-wanting.

Oh well. Anything that gives more screen time to Alec Baldwin and less to Tina Fey. [Ed. note: Yeah, I said it. She's a bad actress. BAD. ACTRESS. Funny writer, bad actress. BAD. I SAID IT. WHO MOVED MY CHIPS?!]

Ahem. Anyway. What do you all think of Salma’s character?

Do not speak ill of the Tina! Though, 30 Rock can be kind of disappointing at times.

That park scene would’ve been more accurate with the Cha Cha Slide.

I’m a huge fan of 30 Rock, and I like Salma and her tata grandes well enough…but I think she’s a train wreck on this show. The writing is a very special kind of brilliance, and La Hayek not only doesn’t have the timing, she can’t say all the words. It pains me every time she tramples over a joke. Her one great moment was when she evoked Ricky Ricardo…in Spanish!

are you people blind??? tina fey is AMAZING! she mirrors my life so closely that sometimes i think she is a reality TV star. yes, latinos can be nerdy, clumsy and socially awkward too.

  5. Salma Hayek’s tits in that park scene deserve an Emmy.

    • or perhaps maybe (a pair of) golden globes?

btw–sorry, i know that joke has been done to death, but i just couldn’t help myself. it’s the rain driving me boobieloopy :)
