For The Twits Among Us: Fashion Lovers Are Liveblogging And Twittering Fashion Week
18 February 2009, 1:37 PM. By Alex Alvarez
Ah, Twitter. It’s humbling when one realizes that one’s social networking tool is more elite than one will ever be.
Case in point: Daily Beast correspondent Renata Espinosa is following those who’ve Twittered New York Fashion Week while we Twittered about reality shows and snack foods.
She makes the point that Twitter allows the streamlined, no-frills of-the-moment commentary that is perfectly geared towards highly visual, but not highly viewed, events like Fashion Week or, ahem, the Westminster Dog Show. Notes Espinosa: “When you’re dealing with fashion, and not the finer details of an economic stimulus package bill, a snap judgment is all you really need.”
Of course, what we love about Twitter is that it allows, more often than not, for instant, unedited tidbits that haven’t been altered or glossed over. Espinosa’s reaction to the William Rast show (Justin Timberlake is behind the label, to give you an idea of how surreal and hilarious this all is):
Meanwhile, over at William Rast, one of the more head-scratching shows on the calendar (celebrities like Justin Timberlake with denim brands show at New York fashion week because…uh, why, exactly?), Refinery29 was screaming, “Horror! People with seats and major Eds get shut out of William rast at 8 minutes after time listed on invite! Who starts shows on time?” (Note to Refinery29—you didn’t miss much. In fact, you missed a big show of nothing—LA-style studded motorcycle jacket nothing.)
Slim it down to 140 characters and THAT quick, sharp, smart sentiment would make an ideal Twitter tweet. Another example? The Moment’s tweet that “Marc Jacobs pulling up his kilt after Carine Roitfeld asked him if he was wearing underwear. (He was.)” Insidery and instantaneous. We like it.
In fact, we’ve been following Mary Rambin’s (yes, yes, that Mary Rambin) Twittering / liveblogging of the shows this week and it’s been kind of fun to see all the action as it happens. That’s her in the image above, liveblogging while women with BMIs of 15 teeter around before her. We are blogging a woman as she blogs. Meta!
Now, if only Twitter had a way of allowing quick image uploads as a tweet, then it’d be pretty much perfect. But, for now, our gallery of our favorite (Jason Wu, Narciso Rodriguez) and least favorite (Diane Von Furstenberg) Fashion Week looks will have to do.

i am seriously stuck to my phone, reading the fashion week tweets. (and guanabee’s) I wish i was there, but doesn’t seem like if fashion week this season isn’t as exciting as in the past.
