Guanabee Upgrade: Cindy Casares Is Our New Managing Editor
2 March 2009, 1:45 PM. By Daniel Mauser
Today is a big day for us at Guanabee, Cindy Casares, one of the site’s founding partners is joining us full-time as Managing Editor. There are many reasons why I believe that, under the authority of Cindy, the editorial of this website will improve infinitely; one of these being that she’s the one who established its tone in the first place.
It was exactly two years ago that Cindy’s writing caught my eye. I was browsing one of my favorite websites when I noticed a string of comments on one particular article that were some of the wittiest, funniest things that I had read in a long time. Luckily this mysterious commenter had placed a link to her personal blog where I quickly confirmed how incredibly talented she was and how she was just the person I was looking for. I e-mailed her out of the blue and ask her to please meet me to talk about this idea I had for a Latino website. She was obviously skeptical about this random guy contacting her, but after checking with her sources, she realized my proposition was legit. And so we met for lunch and I shared with her how much I thought that Latino media sucked and how Latinos were not accurately portrayed in the media and how I wanted to create a site that would remedy that. That would raise the standards. She agreed and we got to work. The second time we met she had written five sample stories that would quickly encapsulate what Guanabee is today: “a fresh glance into the world of Latino affairs without the sentimentality or stereotypes found in other media.” One of the features she wrote for that meeting that became a staple of the site, is “You Got Some Splainin’ To Do,” where Guanabee answers all your questions about Latino-ness.
Before joining Gunabee full-time, Cindy worked as a copywriter for two of the most prestigious ad agencies in the world writing ads for some of the most recognizable brands. Her upbringing on the U.S.-Mexico border has afforded her with a mastery of the Spanglish language and her ten-plus years in media give her a keen sense of what is hip and relevant, not only to Latinos, but to Americans at large. It also doesn’t hurt that she is incredibly funny.
We are ecstatic to have Cindy on board full time. Please congratulate her and if you have any good chisme please send it to her by e-mailing tips@guanabee.com
