Jackie Guerra Tells Tyra Her Playboy Bunny Mom Nagged Her Into Being Fat

jackieguerratyra31809Jackie Guerra, who is essentially famous for two things: playing Selena Quintanilla’s sister in the movie Selena and once having weighed 300 pounds–revealed yet another unusual factoid about her life on The Tyra Banks Show this week. Her mom was a Playboy bunny and that affected her body image.

Jackie, who is now selling herself (and her book) as an authority on weight loss, regularly appears on the Tyra Banks Show whenever it’s time to talk to fat people. And boy did they have some fat loving people on this week. One woman weighs 600 pounds and is unhappy because she wishes she weighed 1000. “I don’t like movement,” she told Tyra. Then, there was Anna, the young Greek girl who is rebelling against her former beauty queen mom by staying fat. Anna’s mother Eleni is a former Miss Cyprus and constantly rags on her about her weight, telling her no Greek man will ever want her. Turns out Jackie has more than a little experience with this kind of personal hell.

Hola and congrats on your fab site and blog, it’s always great to have more Latinas sharing information and opinions. Gracias for including a clip of my recent appearance on TYRA. I just wanted to take a moment to clarify a few things that you mentioned in your blog about me.
    1. I agree that most people probably know me from my role as Suzette in the movie, “Selena”. I’m very proud to have been a part of that movie and appreciate all of the enthusiasm and support that I receive for it. I’m not so arrogant as to assume that you or anyone else is familiar with all of my work however I would suggest to you that aside from my work on tv and in film, more people probably know me as the host of “The Jackie Guerra Show” and “Workin’ It” on Air America Radion (talk-radio shows about worker’s rights, immigration and the Labor movement) or for my work as a Union Organizer and political activist than, as you suggest, for weighing 300 lbs.

I take mucho pride in the fact that as a standup comic as well as an actor, I never played the “fat-girl role”. I have too much respect for myself and others who suffer from the disease of obesity and would NEVER play into ignorant stereotypes or ever to use my time onstage to make anyone feel badly about themselves (except bigots and bullies). And I have ALWAYS worked very hard to be an example to others that in fact the size of your nalgas does not determine your self-worth.

    2. I certainly did not mean to imply that my Mom nagged me into being fat but rather I merely tried to use my own life as an example for this mother who is doing mucho harm to her daughter. I know from experience that the more my Mom nagged, the harder I resisted her attempts to get me to lose weight. Sadly, it is very common for many of us to do the opposite of what a (well-meaning) parent is trying to get us to do when we feel that we are being judged or criticized.

    3. I am NOT, as you say, marketing myself as a weight-loss expert. Neither my book, “UNDER CONSTRUCTION; How I’ve Gained and Lost Millions of Dollars and Hundreds of Pounds” (Penguin/NAL) nor I am a weight-loss expert.

    4. I am someone who spent most of my life being morbidly obese, for which I never made any apology to anyone. I lived my life, had a lot of fun and am grateful for the opportunities that I had. As I always said, I was “llenita pero sabrosa”! But like so many others, I didn’t understand the disease that is obesity and I thought that I was destined to be fat forever. So I chose to be fat and fabulous!

    5. But then I learned that yes, it is true that you CAN be fat and fabulous but you cannot be fat and healthy. Every 47 minutes someone dies from an obesity-related complication in the U.S. and we as Latinos are the most at-risk for type II diabetes and heart disease. Think about it, do you ever see old people who are obese?

    6. After losing and gaining the same 100 lbs. in a 10-year period and MUCHO RESEARCH including a meeting with the Surgeon General, I chose to end my own lifetime cycle of yo-yo dieting and give myself the best chance to live a long and healthy life. And in April, 2004 I had gastric bypass surgery.

    7. In the past 5 years I have lost 170 lbs., quit smoking, have learned about nutrition, I now exercise regularly, don’t eat any refined sugar, fast food or drink carbonated beverages. I am grateful every single day for the new, healthier and so much easier life that I have today and I want this kind of freedom for everyone.

    8. I feel very fortunate that through my own transformation I’ve learned a lot including the fact that we will not have healthy bodies until we have healthy minds, affordable healthy foods and access to quality health care for EVERYONE.

    9. I wrote my book for the same reason that I now spend most of my time doing personal appearances, which is to openly and honestly share my own experiences in an effort to help and hopefully inspire others to take control of the quality of their life.

    10. I am committed to using every public platform available to me to help end the prejudice against fat people and change the national conversation about obesity as well as to hopefully inspire some of mi gente to get healthy. I will spend the rest of my life doing my part to make life healthier, happier and more exciting for everyone!
    Gracias y Adelante!

      WTF Guanabee?!!

You started out as sassy coverage from a Latino point of view — “spicy coverage for the Latino in you…” — was your motto and u charmed us with coverage many sites glossed over. No, maybe not “hard news,” but a cultural perspective with heart.

What happened? Now you’ve morphed into “spicy coverage” and the reports, as evidenced by Ms. Casares’ piece, has made Guanabee hit an all-time low. Have u jumped the shark?

You want “snarky” brilliance? Go read D-listed (www.dlisted.com) and you’ll get more laughter and chola glamour from Michael K than Cindy’s apparent vendida self-hating bullshit.

All Ms. Casares needed to do, as writer with integrity, is some basic research on her subject. A simple google search of “Jackie Guerra” yields over 50 PAGES of material detailing her activism, creativity, humor and brilliance. I would expect more from your managing editor than this vile “hater” excuse for an article from a fellow Latina about one of the hardest working and articulate women on TV.

I hope you issue a heartfelt apology.

I have read your book and for me it was just as much about living a life with no regrets and full of life and compassion as it was about losing weight. That was just part of your story. WOW! I am truly amazed at the jaded and negative vibe that C. Casares immediately displays in this very simple couple of paragraphs. I say get ready for some rebuttals on this little, mislead blurb written about quite honestly, one of the most lovely people ever. What makes me happy is that after spewing something ridiculous about the 2 things that Jackie is famous for and injecting her own spin on it, a clip from the show is included which clearly shows a person showing genuine concern and heartfelt words for someone who is obviously seeking support.
As someone who is lucky enough to have worked with Jackie, although it was many years ago, I know the person she was back before she supposedly ’starting marketing herself as an expert on weight loss’ and I can tell you, she’s always been a kind-hearted person who sees the beauty in others, a great spirit and a quick smile, not to mention one of the most infectious laughs you’ve ever heard. I am proud that I’ve gotten to witness her success as not only Selena’s sister, but the activist she has become and trying to help people. Do your homework Cindy Casares! Open the book and read for yourself!!! There is page after page of overcoming adversity and all the while helping others!
I LOVE the fact that her speaking engagements put her in front of an audience that included Bill Clinton, you should check out the photo of her with the Former President of The United States, it’s a fabulous shot of her being her fabulous self…it doesn’t get much better than that. If I’m not mistaken, he is a historical figure and he held the top job in the country. Jackie must be doing something right.
No offense, Ms. Casares, but I highly doubt this blog that you write will get any notoriety in the eyes of our new President. Isn’t there something better to do with your time than tear down someone from our sisterhood? Seriously. If we all put the same amount of effort into being a good person who is as memorable as Jackie is, imagine the possibilities.

Thank you very much, Elvis has left the building. **Just a funny little reference from the book. I have to go put on my oxygen mask now.

    Go, Jackie Go!!!

    Guys,

I get the concern and I think it’s great that you feel compelled to defend Jackie but I think that, maybe, you are missing the point here and rushing to defense where no insult has been dealt.

This site has a particular voice - it’s kind of snarky, kind of sarcastic, kind of holier than thou. This is part of what makes it unique. If you want straightforward coverage and hard news, or fawning celebrity gossip, I think you are probably in the wrong place. I don’t think it’s Cindy’s fault that you don’t “get” this about the site.

She didn’t say anything offensive or incorrect here. Cindy is referring to a very specific clip of an episode. In this clip, and in other episodes of Tyra’s show, Jackie is marketed and promoted as an expert on weight loss because of her own experiences with having lost weight. She’s Tyra’s go-to celebrity in that department. Cindy didn’t insinuate or embelish anything that isn’t already being put out by the show.

Additionally - yes, Jackie Guerra is primarily known for playing Selena’s sister and, thanks to her work with this very show that portrays her as an expert, as someone who has lost a good deal of weight. There is absolutely no offense meant by this - Jackie is a star in her own right, but it’s ridiculous to argue that she’s better known than she is. This isn’t Penelope Cruz we’re talking about here. This isn’t even Rosie Perez.

Again, I think it’s great that “sisters” are sticking together, but your sentiment is lost when you accuse another Latina - Cindy - of something she hasn’t done. It’s cool if you disagree or offer another perspective, but throwing Cindy under the bus or trying to alter reality to suit your argument isn’t doing you, Jackie or Latinas any favors.

Uhhh, hate to break it to you, but being “snarky, kind of sarcastic, kind of holier than thou” is not unique for a blog.

Jackie Guerra is a respected Labor Rights Activist! She fought for social justice well before doing comedy or Selena. Her background is well documented and available on the web, should anyone (like a Managing Editor) care to fact check.

“This site has a particular voice - it’s kind of snarky, kind of sarcastic, kind of holier than thou. This is part of what makes it unique.” LOL WTF!
This site is TMZ Perez Hlton and the all the women on” Rock Of Love” rolled into one. It has no point of view, insight, and info you can get anywhere. You hired Cindy to show something about Latinos but she stands for nothing except destruction. She makes Carlos Mencia look like Socrates. Jackie Guerra gave 7 writers their first job when she starred in First Time Out. She got them all into the Writers Guild which is no easy feat. Please. Jackie won an Imagen award for the positive portrayals of Latinos and gays on her show. Please—don’t say she is known for once being 300 pounds and pretend you were being “snarky”. You were being third grade. Admit it and move on. And by the way your readers can read so to insult them and say they can’t read is not the best approach. Unless you were being “SNARKY” —which in your lexicon must mean confusing.

Don’t know either of these ladies…But I must say Jackie’s response sounded much more intelligent then the authors “snark”. To each his own, but don’t knock someone for wanting to tell their side of the story.

It didn’t sound like anyone was throwing anyone “under the bus” just another point of view. Not enough snark for ya honey?

I was referring specifically to this comment:

” What makes me happy is that after spewing something ridiculous about the 2 things that Jackie is famous for and injecting her own spin on it, a clip from the show is included which clearly shows a person showing genuine concern and heartfelt words for someone who is obviously seeking support.”

Calling those two things “ridiculous” is, yes, a point of view, but one based on a lack of understanding. Jackie Guerra is most known for the two things Cindy mentioned. It’s great that she’s a kind spirit with a good soul and a bubbly laugh and eyelashes that cure cancer, but this really has nothing to do with the fact that she went on the Tyra Banks show to talk about weight loss and share a story about her upbringing.

To go on and say that the author didn’t do her job and won’t get recognition, etc. is undermining Cindy for the purpose of making Jackie look better/different. It’s aiming a bit low by casting out opinions and criticisms that don’t really have anything to do with what Jackie said in this clip.

For the record, referring to people as “honey” during a discussion does not help bolster your argument.

        Hola Guanabee Casares supporters,

Your defense of Cindy Casares is expected. She’s your managing editor — so either your boss, or someone you hired. Her ties to Gawker proved useful to your site for a time — but you appear to be losing your way now. How are you going to continue building the Guanabee empire when you are in so much denial about the real pain, outrage, disgust you have just dumped on your readers?

Penelope Cruz, may be a brilliant actress, but honestly — does that set her above someone else who has dedicated themselves to achieving social justice?…or a single mother doing her best to support her family…or a ditch digger who reads poetry on Friday nites? Fame doesn’t trump an individual’s self worth.

        Where’s your humanity Guanabee?

BTW - I have a very dear friend that just died of cancer. He was a Latino, an activist, and a musician — Manny Castillo. Google him sumtime. If anyone could have saved him with their cancer-curing eyelashes — I would have flown them out in a heartbeat, instead of watching him suffer and die. Thanks for belittling a disease that affects so many of our gente (especially those like Castillo, who grew up next to one of the most toxic neighborhoods in the US) — AS WELL AS hating on our weight & body issues.

        And you defend this?

  13. Seriously people? Grow the fuck up. This is a blog that offers opinionated commentary - its Cindy’s snarky commentary & its her opinion. It is not meant to be a journalistic tour de force. Yes, maybe she should fact-check a bit more, but at the end of the day it is NOT meant to be taken literally.

    • Actually, i stand behind my assertion that Jackie is known by the world at large for playing Selena’s sister and, more recently, if at all, for having lost a bunch of weight. The latter only because she keeps appearing on Tyra’s show. So, no. It wasn’t for a lack of fact checking.

      • Touche. Didn’t mean to offend. Simply meant that clearly she has a very involved following so maybe mentioning her other accomplishments for which she is apparently known would have pacified the “Crucify Cindy” lynch mob which has descended upon Guanabee.

Cindy was obviously being a snide little monster here. Judging from the paltry 2 pages “Cindy Casares” generates when doing an online search, and the poor hypey quality of these posts, it appears the rude little “fame-whore” is the one working for Guanabee.com

Jackie Guerra has never followed the dollar. She’s successful because she’s struck a deep cord with our people. The issues Jackie’s championed for the last 16+ years I’ve known her (labor rights, health care reform, and other progressive issues) have hardly been lucrative endeavors.

I’m glad to see a gentle and positive person like Guerra achieve a measure of success. It feels like karmic justice to see a kind person with a good heart land a book deal and be featured on TV More power to her!

If Casares really met Guerra, perceived her to be a b**tch, and that led her to write the above piece without fact-checking — then she should have provided us with FULL DISCLOSURE. Anything less is unethical.

I’m also beginning to agree with the above comments that call for a boycott. I have showed Guanabee.com lots of love. Logged on every day, shared the site with friends, etc. All that is going to change if this matter isn’t cleared up and an apology issued.

Guanabee just messed with a respected labor rights organizer.

Given how important social justice issues are to Latinos; Cesar Chavez, UFW, SEIU, battling segregation, health care advocacy, school reform, etc — it’s only fitting that we employ the tactics which have brought our people great success when confronting smug, corporate bastards across the ages. The Boycott.

It’s activists like Jackie that have made a site like Guanabee even possible. It’s because of the dedication of women like Guerra that you “snarky” folks have had many of the opportunities you’ve benefited from available. It’s wrong to belittle those whose have helped our raza progress.

And I don’t know what’s worse, Casares’ mean-spirited article or the disappointing lack of understanding Casares and Guanabee have shown in their above-posted comments. Que gatcho.

Cindy Casares, if you don’t fix this and apologize, we’ll remember.

Daniel Mauser, if you are unwilling to take responsibility for this, we’ll take action.

Guanabee sponsors/supporters, take a stand and let this site know you expect them to do the right thing.

So… which is it? No one reads this site, Cindy gets a “paltry” two pages of Google hits on her name, yet “the world is watching?”

What, exactly, was mean-spirited about this article? If you take issue with Cindy’s statement that Jackie is “essentially famous for two things,” that’s your right - but, come on. MOST people do not know who Jackie Guerra is. SOME people know her because she played Selena’s sister in a movie. VERY FEW people know or follow her role as an activist. EXTREMELY FEW people care either way.
Cindy’s comments have NOTHING TO DO with Jackie’s role as an activist. They have nothing to do with whether or not Jackie is a good person, or a bad one.

And, for the record, sponsors are not going to care that Cindy wrote a post about Jackie Guerra and didn’t mention that she’s a “nice person.” They’re only going to see the pageviews that your strange and slightly obsessive preoccupation with a little-known actress are bringing to this post.

How is that warranted in any way? Because you incorrectly perceived that a writer insulted a little-known actress and guest on a daytime TV talk show, it makes it ok for you to call her names? Again, you and other “Jackie Fanz” are the only one hurling out names and accusations. Nowhere in the post in Jackie referred to by any harmful nickname or epithet. Read the post before you comment. I’m not being “snarky,” either. Seriously: Read it.

I’m taking the time to respond to you because I think it’s important, in a discussion, for both people involved to be on a level playing field. I realize, now, that you are in over your head. So, I’ll let it go! I realize I’m risking coming off as obsessive and angry as the people with whom I’m discussing this.

            Have an awesome day!

First of all, a very wise person once said, “No one ever erected a statue to a critic.” Jackie has done more for the world (workers’ rights, gay rights, women’s rights, AIDS research, union organizing, etc.) than this silly “spicy coverage” blog ever will. A little word of advice: women should support one another; not tear each other down. Even if Guanabee’s assertions are correct that Jackie is only known for Selena and losing weight (which clearly they are not), that is certainly infinitely better than being known for a blog providing “spicy coverage” that basically capitalizes on the fame and notoriety that others have worked to achieve. PS … congratulations … your attack of “someone who isn’t known for very much” certainly has brought a lot of attention to your site (at least for a day). And a further word of advice to you, Jackie . . . a little something I learned back in high school when the rednecks would call me a fag . . . never pay attention to what someone says unless you respect them and value their opinion. My guess is that Guanabee is 0 for 2 in that regard.

Her writing is the equivalent of female wrestling. I actually read one of her articles which by the way received a grand total of 2 comments! She actually had the cojones to put down Perez Hilton who she imitates on a not so subtle tip! Then she had the gallstones to put down DESPERATE HOUSESTRIFE Longoria and called her”Ugly mug”. Not that i give a rats teta about Eva Parker but if the world pays her miliions to be the face of shows and products and glamour then I must assume some think she is not an “ugly mug”. Cute Little Guests,

I got a real chuckle (LOL’s, if you will) by reading your little tantrums. You’d think Jackie was Jesse Jackson, or someone as accomplished and respected as him after reading your responses(joke).

So I read Cindy’s post, then carefully read all the guests’ posts and then went back again and re-read Cindy’s post. Man, YOU GUESTS MUST HAVE NO READING COMPRESHENSION SKILLS because Cindy’s post has absolutely nothing negative written in it. Stay with me while I analyze:

STATEMENT 1: “Jackie Guerra, who is essentially famous for two things: playing Selena Quintanilla’s sister in the movie Selena and once having weighed 300 pounds–revealed yet another unusual factoid about her life on The Tyra Banks Show this week.” - These are qualified (by the word “essentially”) statements of fact! What is there to debate on this? This is not a mean or opinionated statement. It’s a qualified statement of fact that does not require any research. The only thing I could debate Cindy on is whether this woman is indeed “famous,” because before seeing this, I did not know this woman by name (and, pathetically, I know a lot of celebrities and activists - even the more obscure - by name and memory). And if she is famous, it most certainly is because of Selena and now the TB Show, not her other social activism (remember, fame is relative).

STATEMENT 2: “Her mom was a Playboy bunny and that affected her body image.” - Statement of fact, confirmed by Jackie herself.

STATEMENT 3: “Jackie, who is now selling herself (and her book) as an authority on weight loss, regularly appears on the Tyra Banks Show whenever it’s time to talk to fat people.” - Again, another simple statement of fact here. No opinion or malicious shot at who she is. And it’s very apparently true; she’s selling a book, she acts as some sort of authority and she regularly appears on the show. Ok, one could argue that she’s selling herself as an authority on COPING WITH weight loss and pressures regarding it, rather than on HOW TO LOSE weight, but then you’re arguing symantics. Point is, Tyra is paying her (or plugging her) to appear and she’s acting like her view is based on some sort of expertise.

STATEMENT 4: “Turns out Jackie has more than a little experience with this kind of personal hell.” - Statement of obvious fact. Jackie infers as much with everything she says in the clip.

CONCLUSION: There is nothing jaded, malicious, negative, mean, insensitive, etc. etc. in any of the statements written above by Cindy. Where are you people coming from? I challenge you to quote me one truly mean, malicious, unsubstantiated or negative thing that she wrote that wasn’t based on facts or, at worst, valid opinion.

You must be upset that Jackie isn’t as famous and well-revered as you think she is (or deserves). If you guests are upset that Jackie isn’t as famous to everyone else as she is to you in your own life (which apparently is your only valid issue that I can find here), then don’t take that out on Cindy (who by the way is also a very nice person that you all would like if you could get to know her).

And, remember, the very point of posting things like this is to attract people like you all to surf through here, get your panties in a wad and have you see ads along the way. This type of controversy and uproar is exactly what the advertisers want to see from Guanabee. So your approach of banning or boycotting Cindy or Guanabee would be unwise. Rather, if you had half a brain, you’d boycott the advertisers themselves. But like a moth to a flame, my guess is you’ll keep coming back.

I’m sure Jackie Guerra is a very nice person (and Cindy said nothing here to oppose that suggestion) who wants to help folks learn from her own experience. But if Jackie did write her book simply to help, inform and inspire, I sure hope she’s donating the profits of all her efforts (books and TV appearances) to charity. Otherwise, she’s in it for the dinero and fame. And her post above is a desparate attempt to keep you all as loyal followers. Next time, try to be more honest with yourselves and especially with us.

And be sure to tip your waiters.

    Your Master,
    Pachanga

Wow. Stumbling across this exchange has been enlightening.

It appears that the situation was initially triggered by a simplistic remark in a posting that could have benefited from a bit of online research. Had this been a new writer, there may have been some wiggle room. Since these comments came from a “Managing Editor” and appeared to lack the basic journalistic practice of fact-checking, it opened Guanabee up for a great deal of scrutiny.

Aggravating the issue were the “staff” responses which, instead of a simple — “It was not my intention to demean or insult…” — went the way of “guys, you just don’t get it” and “can’t you read” variety. Not the best responses when people are pissed off.

In fact, all (but one) apparent “Guanabee responses” to these outrage postings came from a very patronizing position — a place of not wanting to own up to or even understand the core of the snafu.

This someone you call “a little known actress” that “VERY FEW” people know about has generated more comments than any other posting this month and it’s one of your top-hitting posts as well.

This Jackie Guerra has moved MORE readers than Madonna, Obama, Shakira, Hugh Hefner, Dora the Explorer or even Cesar Milan! Clearly, she’s a person whose worth and following Guanabee has underestimated or deliberately ignored.

Not the best of business practices, ay?

And where is the presence of Guanabee’s Danial Mauser, who earlier this month, pesonally gushed about how Cindy Casares had such a great understanding and connection to US Latinos?

These comments above are coming from much further afield than Guerra’s native So Cal. Her “fans” appear to be a multi-state force to be reckoned with. Even trannies in Puerto Vallarta love this woman!

    Eeeet’s something to think about.

    Mr. Mauser, what say u?

Where did she move them to? A treadmill?
Great that this woman is writing books and being on TV and taking pictures with politicians and civil rights leaders but c’mon. Unless she is on the Tyra Show talking about immigrant rights or promoting resources for women of color instead of talking about her triumphs over her vain mother and being a gorda, I don’t see how her random activista bursts trump her ingrained Hollywood streak.

And, because no one read the thing, there was absolutely nothing offensive written in the original post. Calling the author a “chancla face that needs to eat a hamburger” is offensive and undoubtedly not in synch with the message Guerra is promoting.

Cindy goes for the most obvious joke time after time. To be fair I read her blurb about spiders on bananas. Her joke was that she did not know Tulsa had Whole Food markets. Her implication was that Tulsa is not cool or trendy enough to have a healthy “chi chi” food store. That is the easy joke. The obvious stereotype is that Oklahoma is not cool. People take offense because they are insulted by being dismissed with simplistic outdated humor. I realize that Texas and Oklahoma have their rivalries but I thought her goals were bigger. Good comedy has layers of insight, thought, freshness, boldness, and are memorable. Calling Oklahoma a hick state and Jackie famous for once being 300 pounds is not the comedy writing one expects from a managing editor of a site with greater aspirations.

I didn’t call anyone a chancla face — only pointed out the obvious. This Jackie Guerra posting has moved more Guanabee readers to comment than any other single article all month…possibly all year. The shear volume of responses clearly show that Guerra has generated more interest than any of other above-mentioned celebrities.

Look through past Guanabee posts for yourself, as it does appear that Casares writing is consistently poorly researched and not funny. Even when covering people from her native Texas, like Eva Longoria, she still can’t find anything better to do than put them down and provide info that barely scratches the surface of issues relevant to Latinos.

Compare Cindy Casares’ work to other Guanabee writer, Alex Alvarez, who it appears DOES know how to write AND be funny.

How the heck did Casares manage to land this “Managing Editor” gig, when she is clearly lacking in some very basic skills?

Un regalito for u from Jackie lovers and ex-Guanabee readers in Florida…

    Guanabee burns another bridge
Posted by Gomez and Co. |

Gomez hesitates to blast another English-language Latino entertainment blog, especially one with much better layout and graphics than Gomez’s own paltry (but free) blogspot hack job - but somebody’s gotta do it.

The blog in question is Guanabee, run by an angry, poorly-dressed Tejana named Cindy Casares and, from what insiders tell Gomez, bleeding money left and right. Where it was once thought to be promising, advertisers now avoid Guanabee like most sensible women avoid tacky scarves.

We’d feel bad about Guanabee’s massive hemorrhaging, if not for the fact that Guanabee has long mistaken cruelty for satire, and stupid for snark. The blog long ago squandered its opportunity to be an insightful modern voice for Latinos by Latinos. Instead, it has twisted itself into a misguided, unfunny attempt to be a voice bludgeoning successful Latinos, by unsuccessful Latinos.

In other words, Guanabee is the same old crabs (and, yes, we mean STD) in a barrel that we’re used to finding at, say, the Furrs cafeteria on a Sunday afternoon, when we come back from our ivy league college or fancy NYC job, to talk to our cousins who dropped out of high school. And wear stupid scarves. Guanabee hates, because Guanabee truly wants to be, and isn’t.

The straw that broke Gomez’s sexy hunchback regarding Guanabee was their abuse this week of comedian, author and activist Jackie Guerra, whom Ms. Casares accused of being famous only for having played Selena’s sister in a movie and for having once upon a time weighed 300 pounds.

This bleak summary of Ms. Guerra’s life and career is not only mean-spirited, it was completely false and lazy. Guerra is an Emmy-winning actress, comedian, TV host, designer, author and radio personality, and an inspiration to millions of people.

Let us, as an exercise in fairness, compare this to the illustrious “biography” of Ms. Casares, Guanabee’s managing editor. Ms. Casares, before coming on board as a blog editor was…drum roll please…a copywriter for an ad agency. And…well, that’s it.

Yep. That’s it. To her credit, however, Ms. Casares does bear a striking resemblance to Journey lead singer Steve Perry, especially when she wears these manly sunglasses. Presumably Ms. Casares finds them ironic.

Gomez was pleased to see so many of Guanabee’s loyal readers chiming in on the comments page of the uninspired post, in Guerra’s defense. And this is not just because Gomez thinks Gomez kicks Ms. Casares’s ass in the satire department. Or maybe it is. Pleasure is pleasure, be it vicarious or not.

Gomez wonders what, exactly, Ms. Caseres thinks she is achieving with her nasty, insulting blog, which tries desperately to be funny by doing little more than skewering people who generally don’t deserve it and who ought logically to be on the same side as Ms. Casares, a world that skewers Latinos enough as it is. Good marketing? Methinks not. Then again, Ms. Casares wasn’t in ad sales or anything fancy. She was the one who wrote stuff like “Got Milk?” - only no one remembers her slogans anymore.

Listen. Gomez supports good snark and satire, and funny blogs. We even support healthy competition, don’t get us wrong. We just don’t think Guanabee would know good satire if it bit their managing editor - aka the Latina Ann Coulter - on the ass.

Ms. Casares? Here’s a secret that Ms. Guerra and other successful comedians know: Good satire must be rooted in a basic love and respect for humanity, or it quickly turns into bullying rooted in the satarist’s own unhappy childhood.

Gomez would like to leave Ms. Casares with a quote from Anthony Trollope, with empty hopes that she will heed its advice: “The satirist who writes nothing but satire should write but little — or it will seem that his satire springs rather from his own caustic nature than from the sins of the world in which he lives.”

Ms. Guerra’s only sin, as far as Gomez can tell, was that she was smarter, prettier, and more famous than Ms. Casares.

You all need to face the fact that Jackie’s *pop culture* fame (which is the only level of fame Cindy was obviously referring to) is (I’m sorry) solely attributable to playing Selena’s sister in a movie and for having once upon a time weighed 300 pounds (and now getting paid or plugged by Tyra). She may be *famous* (which is a relative term) in other circles, like social activism (which, again I’m sorry, should not be lumped in with weight loss movements). But, in relative terms, Jackie is famous AT A POP CULTURE LEVEL only due to the movie and her weight law advice. Accept it people.

Fat is a Feminist Issue…and now a very relevant heath issue. Especially given our gente’s high rate of diabetes and other fat-related illnesses.

I also think pop culture celebrity and social justice issues are not mutually exclusive. Look what the death of Rock Hudson did for AIDS. Again and again we see celebrities championing causes, and those championing causes becoming celebrities.

Guanabee regularly covers pseudo-pop or even obviously non pop but newsworthy events & issues (most recently an exploding volcano in Tonga) — that’s something I used to love about this site. The old Guanabee didn’t strive to oversimplify / pigeon-hole Latinos and covered them with the contextual complexity y good humor that was a delight to read.

We are all multi-faceted individuals here. As Latin@s, we are all(ways) not: gangbangers, urban hipsters, straight, frivolous, cholas, fiery, progressive, religious, queer, conservative, etc. As a mix of all races (black, white, red…) Latin Americans are a tremendously diverse people with richly complex lives full of juxtaposition and meaning.

If Guanabee can’t accept that than they’ve really missed the mark my friend.

I don’t think Guanabee would disagree with you on any of the above. Suggesting that they can’t or haven’t accepted what you describe is what’s likely missing the mark.

I also think you’re confusing fighting to defend the social and human rights of the overweight or obese against those who refuse to observe such rights, for example, with supporting a movement like weight loss that tries to convince people to change their own lives. The two are very different and Jackie’s participation in the TB show clip above is part of the latter.

And while celebrity participation in movements may help such causes by raising awareness, sadly the best influence to make people change their own lives is typically either hitting rock bottom themselves or losing a loved one to the same problem. I wouldn’t be so quick to give celebrities too much credit for movements of this sort.

Lastly, what else do you expect from a site that features talking Latina panochas?

I am pointing out that Jackie Guerra’s life was ridiculously oversimplified and then that oversimplification was justified as — “oh, we only are mentioning her pop culture relevance here.” C’mon!

It appears someone didn’t do their homework — i.e. researching the person they’re posting about — then tried to pass it off as a purely pop mention. B.S!

Since Casares appears to be “the acting boss” at this website, it appears that no one on staff will dare to hold her accountable for her sloppy coverage.

In an alternate and more fact-checked universe, the post may have read…

“Jackie Guerra, author, activist and most widely known for playing Selena Quintanilla’s sister in the movie Selena, has recently been championing weight loss on Tyra. Ms. Guerra who once weighed over 300 pounds–revealed yet another unusual factoid about her life on The Tyra Banks Show this week. Her mom was a Playboy bunny and that affected her body image.

Jackie, who is currently touring as an authority on weight loss, regularly appears on the Tyra Banks Show whenever it’s time to talk about health & weight issues. Turns out Jackie has more than a little experience with this kind of personal hell.”

Yes, my adjustment may not be very funny or refined — but I’m not paid to craft posts for a living. I hope it provides a glimpse of how this whole drama could have been avoided and a clue as to how to revive what was once a very edgy and enjoyable blog.

            — Ms. P

I love me some Cindy, and Guanabee is on my daily reader. That will not change. All of our favorite blogs have angles we don’t agree with now and then. We shrug and move on to the next post. It’s the big picture that counts, same with Jackie.

She must have been hurt by the voice of the post because she is working hard to promote self-esteem and self-worth and the last person she expected to poke fun at it, satire it, whatever you want to call it - was fellow Latina. Jackie seems to just want to help people feel better by sharing her experiences. No matter what she is known for, losing all that weight is something to be commended for. give her a little respect for that at least. As a second-generation, college-educated, plus-size Mexican-American woman, I am very proud of Jackie to be on The Tyra Show and talking about positive, REAL issues, as opposed to being on a celebrity rehab show, or hosting that atrocious “I Want to be a Telenovela Star” show. However, I hope The Tyra Show does not pigeon hole her only for the topic of fat people. She has a lot more to offer than just that!

Since when have posts become rationed?

Has a “one post per person” law come into affect?

Ms. Casares, you and your team obviously jumped to conclusions based on your desperation to dismiss what is obviously a chingo of outrage about the tone of your original JG post.

Blog comments are like conversations. It’s amazing that we have the ability to dialogue this way. Eeeet’s one of the many revolutionary breakthroughs the internet has provided us.

That you would mock this level of empowerment and seek to belittle and shut down those who want to discuss very relevant issues is a travesty.

You want to know why your being cluster-f*cked from Vallarta? Because that Puerto Vallarta trannie you thought was fake, was a real person.

Angelito, a HUGE Selena fan, was in San Antonio working on an event and posted from my mac before hopping on a plane to go back to PV — where obviously the outreach spread as he talked to friends and collegues.

Now I see you are actually telling people not to post and “go away.” THAT’s an interesting twist for a blog.

Access to technology, in case you haven’t read the research, is a MAJOR issue in our Latino communities. Privileged pochos may forget what its like to have to share computers with their friends and familia. Should this practice exclude Real People with convictions and opinions they’d like to express?

    The Digital Divide is real.

It appears that Guanabee prefers being the IP Police — rather than accept that a great deal of folks may be expressing genuine grievances. You have already used the 20 or so posts in question to dismiss the larger MAJORITY of postings. THAT’s Rich!

I stepped up and signed at least three of my posts, even putting my email on one of them. There was nothing to hide.

I will let the rest of the folks here in San Anto, (and yes those in Tucson and Miami that were either on the road or away from a laptop) write you themselves, and hopefully identify themselves fully. It’s sad that the IP gestapo in you have brought it to this.

And why are you so smug about the number of postings from Texas? As a Tejana herself, Casares should know that Guerra actually LIVED in San Antonio while making Selena and has a very loyal fan base here. That a chunk of these people happen to work together in the arts and are skilled at grassroots organizing shouldn’t be surprising. It certainly isn’t a reason to spew the cheap — oh yeah, and poorly researched — potshots Casares has launched above.

Maybe Tyra can have us all on her show. Then you could meet these “imaginary friends” in the flesh.
