dora_the_explorer_31709Yup, here she is. After all the "teasing" that the new, hot, femme Dora wouldn't be revealed until Fall, she's here before Spring. The new Dora is taller, slimmer and little older and has long, flowing hair. Gone are the bowl cut, bermuda shorts and chubby cheeks. Nickelodeon and Mattel, who own Dora, are attempting to assure concerned parents and teachers that, while Dora may appear to be all glammed up, she hasn't lost her sense of wonder, adventure or ability to sell products. In fact, they say she "will expand into the world of solving mysteries that have overt and relatable pro-social themes -- like volunteerism, water conservation, or planting trees to help the environment." Why couldn't she do that without dripping with pink and purple accessories, you know? Her Limited Too tunic is totally going to get caught on a fence mid-environmental rally. See, we like feminine trappings like clothes and makeup and jewelry - but we also like to think that we'd register on people's radars without having to wear all these. Are little girls ever going to get another Jane Eyre or Anne of Green Gables ? Or will all their role models look as if they've been queefed out by Candace Bushnell? Sigh. Oh, Dora. At least practice the "takeaway" rule: Before you leave your house each morning, look at yourself in the mirror and take away one accessory. Because, mija, really, your look is a little "overkill," you know?

I can see my 4 year old niece now.. "Tia who the fuck is this?!? I said I wanted to watch Dora not this girl! WERE IS BACKPACK AND BOOTS AND MAP AND.... oh fuck it, I cannot deal with this now. Lets watch Spongebob." Well maybe with less cussing.. but pretty much that is how she would feel. She doesn't like change. [she doesn't watch Blues Clues with Joe, because well it's not Steve.]

Second to last paragraph - last sentence ... "Or will all their role models look as if theyOve been queefed out by Candace Bushnell?" ... I believe the word here should be coiffed ... queef is something TOTALLY different!!!

Leggings! A twinkle in her eye! THE HORROR! A socially repso responsible enviro tween can't also be (admittedly stereotypically) feminine or girly? Should all enviro females wear men's cargo shorts & bob their hair so they don't "catch" anything on a fence? The problem with this blog - and the many, many blogs like it - is these feminists inability to accept or understand that women who play into stereotypically girly or feminine looks can still be just as goddamn feminist and as active in issues of social justice. Go worry about something important. At least Dora's trying to save the world.

My kindergartner is enough of an explorer-type, free-spirit, tree hugger that she's already got people calling her a hippie (in a good way). She's got the long-flowing hair and loves her girlie accessories too. I think she'll like the new Dora. ...great... and I'd hoped we were past this... ah well, hope the show has grown up. I like that she kept much of her young look/style... same colors, same jewelry. Her face is even recognizable. I just hope she's developed better manners and doesn't repeat everything so much. Say it. Say it LOUDER!! (yuk)

If your 4 year old niece is talking like that, then you need to see what else is she looking at, because forget about dora growing up, your niece is way too advance for my six year old cousin, who would not know what those words mean or even how to pronounce it.

Of course someone can be as feminist or as into social justice no matter what they wear. Someone could wear military fatigues or a tutu and still share the same opinions. I don't think it's an issue of style choice, but why does Dora have to change at all? If she is a beloved figure as an active little kid with an smart, inquisitive nature, why should that character be axed and a new more lipgloss-friendly model be put in her place? If there needs to be a more grown up model for older children who exemplify the same kind of attributes as Dora, why can't they just make a new one? Is there a limit on how many of these positive images there can be?

Eveyone needs to quit it with this character. All kids grow up and their shapes, sizes, and hair change. This is for children, not adults. We have to learn that characters, video games, rappers etc can't raise our children ONLY US. We make big deals about the wrong things it's a toy. Look at Bratz, and Barbie and all of the things that they do. You all are talking about Backpack and Boots they are only showing her for now. Talking about her clothes she's not wearing anything different from girls that age. If she wore Princess dresses, and costumes in her adventures I'm pretty sure she'll be fine in the clothes they've made for her. We don't know what the whole set up will be. This is for children of the age that not to many toys are targeted towards. Toys go from Dora staright to Bratz/Barbie I believe that Mattel are only targeting those kids age range 5-9. My daughter is 5 and mind you looks and acts five, but is kinda growing apart from Dora and moving towards Bratz babies, and Barbies. I think having an older Dora will keep her excited. Bottom line is we all have our own opinions no one person is right or wrong, but lets learn to raise our children right in this freak-up world we live in.

Alright... I understand some of the concern here, but let's be real.... a 3 year old does not look anything like an 8 year old! 8 year olds are (usually) taller, thinner, longer hair... and yes, I know I'm generalizing here but just for the sake of arguement, you can see my point. How could they not age Dora without making her taller and thinner? As for what she is wearing... both Dora's have the same bracelet and there are some episodes where she isn't wearing backpack! Just because backpack isn't in the picture, doesn't mean he is gone forever! Where is Boots? Is anyone concerned that Dora's faithful sidekick may be gone as well? Come on parents! Kids grow up! Blankie doesn't make it to the slumber parties, teddy takes a new spot on the shelf instead of right next to them on the bed. It's LIFE and growing up and normal! Why shouldn't the girls in our lives get the chance to grow up with someone that they have known and loved since they were two and know that these changes in their lives are normal. We had the Brady Bunch (ok, some of us did haha) and they grew up. Why do we have to keep a cartoon a toddler forever? Oh, and btw... the younger Dora isn't going away, they are going to market both, so younger kids can still enjoy the same old Dora that we have all grown to love.

The original Dora is not being 'axed' or replaced, they are just giving an older alternative for the older age group. And as to why she needs to change, if you ask most 6-8 year old girls 'Dora is for babies' (although mine will watch it behind closed doors). However she thinks this new Dora is really cool. Dora just needed to grow with her fans.

Hi I'm a 12 year old girl and I and my friends don't see way Dora looks too sexy. She dresses more conservitively than most people at our school. I don't know if we're looking at the same picture but shes dressed like or better than most 12 year old girls which shes supposed to be. If someone can show me the provocative pictue I thank them greatly but Dora looks fine to me, my friends, and my 3 and 6 year old cousins. So listen to the youth if you like they kinda know the child view of things.

i'm the sister of the 12yr old (I'm 15) and i fail to see how the tween Dora looks like a "streetwalker" in high school kids look like street walkers (some) not middle school like tween Dora is. A lot of the kids around here wear clothes like this, mainly the middle school crowd. I think Tween Dora's outfit is extremly acceptable. Next time your at the mall or a popular tween hangout, look around and see how many are dressed in mini dresses, ballet flats, and leggings. there is nothing wrong with the tween Dora, even the youger kids in high school dress like this. It's not like she is wearing a mini skirt and tube top! Your beloved dora is still there just a little more girly. when i was in middle school (last year) we went into the woods in whatever we had on, we weren't concered about clothes at all and as long as you are careful nothing will get caught on anything. most of the girls around here get really girly in middle school (i did-ish) and then mellow out in high school to something inbetween girly and tomboy. Lots of kids do it and i'm glad Dora did. Change will happpen you just got to be ready and willing to change along with it or you'll be suprised and thrown out of your comfort zone and want what you can't have back.

This shouldnt be happening dora doesent follow all the barbie dolls she is her own person (ORIGINAL). give us back the (ORIGINAL) dora what are all the little kids going to say when they see this older barbie like dora. dora is an adventurer not a mall shopper. she helps all the animals in the world and helps other people. (this is a good example for the young children that watch dora) going to the mall and getting nails done isnt setting good examples.

i like the new dora, i think she looks way better. most shows change the look of their characters, some do it after the first few shows, and then some wait a while. some shows that have changed their characters are jake long, blues clues, and Strawberry shortcake (but i don't think thats a show), and the first episodes of sponge bob and fairly odd parents had differently looking characters then they do now and people still watch all these show and buy their products. but i think that Dora's change is a good thing and will mix things up a bit, i'm kind of sick of Dora's bowl cut and weird out fit. Dora's shows started playing in 1999,and she way a 7 year old girl in the first episode, which would make her 17 now, and i don't think anyone looks the same for ten years!!!! so every one needs to get over the fact that dora is changing and she has grown alot!!

I think this is a great ideal . I have 2 kids one is 9 and the other one is 2 . The 9 year old has always love dora but now that she is getting older she into High school Musical and Hannah Monta . When I told her about the new Dora and showed it to her she was so happy and cant wait to see her shows. Now my 2 year old loves little dora and I feel as she gets older she will like the older dora as well. You Parents have to rememeber your kids are growning up and so why make a big deal out of the big dora your kids will not stay little forever so thats why little dora has to grow just like our kids. Im glad to see that they are making a new dora for the big and older kids. My 9 year old told me she is glad to see dora getting bigger like her and her clothes were nice . Dora is now a big girl and has the taste of a 9 year old.

Alright, first off Dora is DOLL. She's a fictional character, completely not real. I understand where all the anger is coming from, I have a 1 year old niece that is completely obsessed with Dora, she loves her. But this just brings up the fact, not opinion nor possibility that once this new Dora hits the market, Dora will begin to lose her fans. Remember Barbie, I'm talking about the original Barbie... once the Mattel company began making all those changes to the original Barbie, she definitely lost most of her audience...parents, young girls began to lose interest in her. There is no doubt that because of the changes that Dora is getting now, she will also lose the majority of her public. I'm 17, from New York City getting a public education, and I really don't understand why everyone is making such a big fuss about this issue of Dora "growing up", everyone is acting like its the end of the world, using unnecessary language, seriously... pray to all the God/s of your preference that Dora didn't skip right to "adulthood" and done things that real grown up child celeb stars are doing, because apparently to you all... Dora is more than a cartoon. Grow up yourselves and get over it!

I honestly don't see the big deal. Dora's wearing a tunic, leggings, a bracelet, and a necklace...why is this so horrible?

All I know from all of this is...If you're complaining about a cartoon you really need to go get a gun and shoot yourself in the face because you have no life and you're wasting precious oxygen for those people that do. Get a clue!...It's a CARTOON losers! Obviously the people complaining are also the same type that think Bert and Ernie are gay and that cookie monster needs a 12 step program.

Dora's doomed. Growing up didn't help the Rugrats either, it just made that age group wish Invader Zim hadn't been canceled. Of course, staying young isn't helping the Simpsons' ratings either, but I'd say Dora's kept her integrity pretty well in the past decade by comparison. She really doesn't need the change, or the lipstick, she just needs a show that doesn't ask people the same questions thirty times. Isn't that right? What was that? Say that again? Say it louder! Okay!

i think that the new Dora looks nicer. i mean really, the new Dora is telling children about problems, like recycling, instead of just make believe stories in Spanish, which the new Dora also does. The new Dora is better. Better at helping children learn about adult problems, which kids will like more because they are treated like adults, and she is better looking and better dressed.

Okay, so Dora is now a bit older but what happenes to her cousin or what happens to Boots? Will they be more than family now or more than "friends"? Dora has a bit of makeup on so . . . what happened? How old is she now? I'm scared for my two younger cousins Paige and Kiki. They might turn out to be all femi like this new Dora! :( The old Dora was way better than this newer and improved Dora. Do you think that since so many people don't like this new Dora that they might take her off the air????????

I think it is ok to have dora being 10 yrs old... I have a ten yr old myself and she actually kind of glad she's growing up. But I can't believe she's in middle school! before in the old dora she wasn't even in pre school. It's sad but i'm not upset with the company. Girls grow up. And now days it is all about fashion and acceseries and lipgloss and stuff like that. Especially in middle school. It's ok to be a kid though too. But my youngest niece will be very upset that dora is 10. it's all sad but ok if matell wants to make her a middle schooler than yeah we should all except that. It's no use of making a big disagreement about it. I mean come on! it's not even that bad... I think she looks cuter now and she still has a little bit of little kid in her right?

I object! I don't dress like that, and I'm fifteen! If Dora kept her sense of adventure, though, she would dress a little more practically. She's turning into another Hannah Montana. Remember when Barbies had clothes? XD

No, Dora doesn't look like a whore. Now if she was wearing a leopard print bra and a leather skirt standing under a bridge giving HJ's for money then she would look like a whore. I'm glad they've updated her look, she was fucking creepy before. And Boots is probably there, they just haven't release the updated look for him.

I understand why they gave her the new look.My daughter age 8 stopped watching Dora 2 years ago.She loves how Dora looks and I do think she looks like the girls here age.Maybe she'll have a messenger bag at best a bigger backpack. She does not look like a whore. If you have daughters in this age group you know that this is what they wear.Believe me..I've seen worse on kids this age. They did good.

-shakes head- Its a damn cartoon. Get over it, seriously. Making her look older and more mature was a fantastic idea. My little sisters, 9 and 10, would NEVER watch the regular Dora now, why? Because its a "baby show". However, now that Dora is older, and around their age, I am sure they would go back to watching an educational show like Dora. As opposed to BS like Flapjack and Chowder...And I really don't see how she looks like a slut...She has on a dress and tights and ballet flats...Personally I think she looks adorable. As long as Dora is still teaching Spanish and going on her adventures, who REALLY cares. Its the same old Dora, but with a revamped look.
