pedro_the_movie_3_30_09‘Member adorable Pedro Zamora from The Real World San Francisco or were you a fetus? He was gay and Cuban and HIV-positive and on the television. Any two of those things could get you killed in 1994, but he did all four, so he gets a movie.

Yes, Pedro The Movie is the Pedro Zamora biopic starring relative unknown Alex Loynaz, (he’s been in two episodes of the ABC Family series Greek), premiering on MTV this week. Back when there were no hot tubs on The Real World, (hard to believe, but it’s true), Pedro made headlines for something far more scandalous than schtupping his roommates: being an HIV educator and activist. He did this from the time he was diagnosed with the virus at age 17 until his death at age 22 which occurred the day after the season finale of the show.

His courageous and optimistic nature, (Pedro got married to a guy he met in San Francisco while filming the show), won over the hearts of many Americans, even prompting a call from President Bill Clinton. When he died, it was national news.

Unfortunately, we don’t have high hopes for the movie, despite the fact that it was co-written by Dustin Lance Black who won an Academy award recently for MILKMTV has an attrocious track record when it comes to their television movies. (See The Real World Movie: The Lost Season and My Super Sweet 16: The Movie.) But, as you can tell, we have a soft spot in our hearts for Pedro Zamora and 1994, so we’ll be tuning in and hoping against our better instincts. Pedro The Movie premiers Wednesday, April 1st at 8pm Eastern. The trailer is below.

  1. I also have a soft spot in my heart for Pedro Zamora and 1994! I already set my TiVo for this.

Pedro was one of the best things about 1994. Him and C&C Music Factory. I forgot just how young he was.

  3. Pedro was an excellent human being and the planet lost something special the day he died. That 1994 RW cast was a good one. Over the years that show has lost it’s heart.
