rihanna-cover-girl-people-march-3409This ad for Covergirl mascara featuring Rihanna appears in the newest issue of People which hit stands today. Couldn't the media buyers and salespeople at the magazine have been a little more conscious of context? Her recent domestic abuse drama with boyfriend Chris Brown being played out in every news outlet across the world, (including in the very same issue where this ad appeared), gives it an entirely new and decidedly darker context. Especially with the headline "Lighten your eyes."

Eh, Rihanna is under contract with Covergirl so they will use her likeness however they see fit. While it might be tasteless or insensitive to some, they are caught in a tough spot. Covergirl is all makeup, makeup that just so happens to go on your face. They could've done lipstick and that would've been tacky due to her "alleged" busted lip. Foundation? what about her bruising and contusions? They wouldn't have been able to come out on top with this any way they tried it. Personally, I think it's just a makeup ad and no big deal. Now when they start advertising on how well Covergirl brand cosmetics disguise the fact you've been "allegedly" beaten about the face and neck, that would insensitive and tacky.

Covergirl could have used her police photo and said "No makeup can truly cover up the damage of domestic abuse." But that would have been bold and socially conscious and probably not sold a lot of eye shadow. Covergirl could have also painted Chris Brown's face with a lot of silly makeup in an "effeminizing" way to shame him for the pussy he is for beating up Rhianna. Now that could have been bold, socially consicous and sold their product.......

They're only under contract to pay her, not to run the ads. They could have pulled the ad in lieu of another.

If Rihanna had not been involved in domestic abuse, this ad would have gone by like all the others. Covergirl saw an opportunity for some free publicity - regardless of context or the exploitative nature of the decision to run the ad. They are looking out for the bottom line. And really, it's to be expected from a company whose idea of being socially conscious is limited offering foundation for all skin colors.

Yea, she is being paid to be in ads. When you say they could've run the ad in lieu of another, do you mean another ad with her in it or another ad with someone else altogether? Maybe part of their deal is they get to run so many ads that feature her?

i would say they should have pulled any ads with her in them for about a month. at least out of mags. they could have kept her online. it's just tacky. it gives the reader a bad feeling when they know what is going on behind that beautiful facade.

This is not a new ad. It has been running for several months. Does the context of the ad change just because of what is going on in her personal life right now?

Yes, that's exactly my point. They could have pulled it for this issue. and for the next month.

But we will always know what happened. A month from now, even six months from now, people will always know what happened. I don't know if pulling ads for any length of time does any good.

They could at least wait until the stories about the incident aren't sitting in the same magazine.

    Covergirl just condoned domestic abuse.

A sad example of "Art imitating Life". God Bless them both. Though I agree that Rihanna would be safer staying away from Chris Brown at this time, I believe both parties need our prayers and wishes for them to find the right counseling and guidance, both personally and spiritually. They are both very young, and have obviously not had the necessary guidance that would prepare them to deal with this type of abusiveness in a positive way. The obvious idea, is that they both need help, because they must really "feel" and believe that they love one another. We (who are older now) know, that true love is not painful, but could anyone tell us when we were 20 that "it's not love"? Doubtful.

cover girl should not use anyone in their advertisements that is a bad role model for young women.

Absolutely - while Rihanna is truly going through something that will shape and change her life forever, I feel that her present choices set a bad example for other girls and young women. Although the abuse is not her fault, the choice to stay in the relationship certainly sends a strong message to all those who look up to her. Really not so different from some of the baseball players we have seen in the news whom we hold to a high standard due to their influence on our youth.
