If you’re Latino, chances are you share some Iberian ancestry with a good portion of  Ireland’s population known colloquially as Black Irish. Now, by Black Irish we don’t mean Barack O’Bama. Although, technically he is another kind of Black Irish.What we do mean is caucasian people descended from settlers who migrated from the Iberian Peninsula to Ireland in the fifth century.

Contrary to popular myth, scientists today don’t believe invading Spanish Armada soldiers are responsible for the genetic traits that usually manifest in dark hair, medium to fair skin and, sometimes, blue eyes. What scientists do know is that the Irish men with Gaelic surnames in the west and the east of Ireland show a strong similarity between the Y chromosome haplotypes of males from northwestern Spain and far northern Portugal. And much of those from the western portion of Ireland owe less of their DNA to Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian populations. Plus, the Irish know all about being unappreciated immigrant labor, so we have that in common, too. And most importantly, Black Irish genealogical traits make for one cute person.
