west_side_story_3.17.09Vanity Fair enlisted photographer Mark Seliger to help demonstrate that, no matter how old-fashioned the movie version of West Side Story may seem, no modern incarnation can even come close. Especially if it contains the mediocre and insipid, albeit very pretty, fake cast in the magazine’s photo spread. Hi, J-Lo.

But, really. Jennifer Lopez as Rita? (Seriously, who does Rosie Perez have to cut to get a good part nowadays?) Camilla Belle as Maria? She has all the charisma of a sock mid-skeet slap. However, we totally, completely co-sign casting Rodrigo Santoro as Bernardo. Rounding out the cast of plasticos are Brittany Snow, Ashley Tisdale, Chris Evans, Ben Barnes, Jay Hernandez, Drake Bell and… Robert Pattinson. Aaaaaiiiiiieeeee!

The photos are intended to commemorate West Side Story’s first Broadway revival re-revival, but it sort of just makes us want to Netflix the movie version. Yes, even espite Robert Pattinson and his magical vampire queef glitter.

The first Broadway revival of WWS occurred in 1980 (original production was staged in 1957). The current revival production is not the first. Are they commemorating the 1980 production or the current production? The current production is the second Broadway revival.

    • I went by what was written in the Vanity Fair article accompanying the photo series. You’re absolutely right though… the show did have a 1980 revival.
