binghamton_ny_voong_4.3.09Thirteen people, including gunman Jiverly Voong, are dead following the hostage situation at an immigration center in Binghamton, New York. Voong had used his car to block the back door of the building, then entered through the front entrance, firing a high-powered gun.

Voong’s body, dressed in a bright green nylon jacket and dark-rimmed glasses, was found dead on the building’s first floor, a hunting knife in the waistband of his pants. While earlier reports had the gunman being in his 20s, Voong is now said to be either 41 or 42.

NY Governor David Paterson released a statement about the hostage situation, saying:

This is a tragic day for New York. While the situation is still developing and details are being gathered, we do know that a gunman entered the American Civic Association in Binghamton this morning and that there are fatalities.

Voong is said to have died of a self-inflected gunshot wound.
