rescued-dog-4.6.09 An Australian woman was reunited with her lost dog, named Sophie Tucker, after the animal made a miraculous five-mile swim through shark-filled waters and then survived four months on an island before she was rescued.

The indestructible dog is named after the 1920’s vaudeville entertainer Sophie Tucker (amazing resemblance, really);

She’s reportedly in good health and is happy to be reunited with her owner but the Queensland woman, Jan Griffith, is stunned that her dog made it through the ordeal.

Sophie fell off the Griffith’s boat four months ago as they sailed around the Great Barrier Reef and though Jan searched the area she eventually gave up when she found no sign of the dog. Four months later, however, Jan heard rumors of a wild dog living on a desert island off the coast and wondered if it could possibly be Sophie. “She would have had to have swum through five miles of sea to get there and then work out how to survive,” Jan noted, explaining her disbelief that Sophie would have survived.

In fact, Sophie had to make a six-mile swim through waters filled with tiger sharks and hammerheads and then somehow found St. Bees island, a mostly-deserted island where she survived by hunting goats. The few inhabitants of the island alerted rangers when they found goat bodies and saw a “wild” dog running loose and then, somehow, her owners got wind of the news.

When the Griffith family was reunited with Sophie she still seemed to remember them, and luckily didn’t apply her new goat-savaging skills to humans. Jan recalls, ‘We called her name and she went crazy - whimpering and banging on the cage, so they let her out and she ran over to us and almost knocked us over with excitement.” Happy ending for all, except maybe the sharks.

    Happy ending for all except the sharks? What about the goats? Poor goats. Couldn’t the dog have learned to harvest seaweed?

    HAHAAAA just kidding… but plenty of psycho-vegetarians might have lobbied for it…
