El Bulli Restaurant In Spain Voted Best In The World Yet Again. Too Bad You’ll Never Get A Reservation.

The number one restaurant in the whole wide world is, for the fourth year in a row, El Bulli restaurant on the Costa Brava in Catalonia, Spain. Whatever. When will it be Carlos Mencia’s turn?!
El Bulli was announced the winner of this honor at a ceremony in London, where head chef Ferran Adria dedicated the win to his British runner up. Way to rub it in. The restaurant was awarded after coming out top in the “S. Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2009″ list. The prize was determined by a Restaurant Magazine poll featuring more than 800 chefs, restaurant critics and industry insiders.
In second place was Britain’s charmingly named The Fat Duck restaurant. Chef Heston Blumenthal was forced to temporarily close his eatery earlier this year following a health scare. Perhaps caused by one of Blumenthal’s signature dishes: Snail porridge and egg and bacon ice cream.
El Bulli, being super prestigious, is open for business from June until December with bookings taken on a single day the previous October. Out of roughly 2 million requests for a reservation, the restaurant seats a scant 8,000 diners per season. If you do happen to nab a table, you can look forward to dishes like pine nut marshmallows, rock mussels with seaweed and fresh herbs, and passion fruit trees.
The restaurant itself has reported losses since 2000 and makes additional money through books and Chef Adria’s lectures.
