Letizia Versus Carla Bruni: Whose Life Rocks Harder?
28 April 2009, 4:30 PM. By Alex Alvarez
Much has been made about pitting France’s First Lady Carla Bruni and Letizia, Princess of Asturias against one another as rivals of some sort. But, while we’re pretty sure they don’t call one another up at night to giggle about Michelle Obama’s clashing cardigans, we think these two are probably totally ok with their own lives. Because, let’s face it, these two women have had opportunities most of us dream of. So let’s try and figure out which of the two’s life rocks the hardest. Shall we? We shall.
1. Who has the hotter husband?

That’s, uh. Subjective.
2. Who had/has the better career?
Before becoming Her Royal Highness The Princess of Asturias, Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano was a print and television journalist working in Mexico and Spain.
Carla Bruni, on the other hand, was a model and singer prior to becoming France’s First Lady. Now, we don’t know much about journalism (obviously), and we don’t have idols, but we’d rather follow in Oprah’s steps over Madonna’s. If only because Oprah’s steps are littered with FREE! CARS!
So we’ll call this one even. Decide who you think had/has the better career while you listen to the smooth song stylings of Carla Bruni herself:
3. Who has the better mother-in-law?

Both women have incredibly interesting women as mother-in-laws. Letizia’s is Queen Sofia, who is awesome for a number of reasons (like, for instance, sharing our birthday) and having been Βασίλισσα Σοφία της Ισπανίας (that’s Sophia, Princess of Greece and Denmark) before marrying King (then Prince) Juan Carlos of Spain. Greece AND Denmark!
Sofia was born in Athens, but grew up in Egypt and South Africa after the Greek royal family was exiled from their home during World War II. Sofia went on to represent Greece in sailing at the 1960 Summer Olympics. And, then, there’s this:
Queen Sofía is both a great-great-granddaughter (paternally) and a great-great-great-granddaughter (maternally) of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and is, through several lines, her husband’s third cousin.

Carla Bruni’s mother-in-law is Andrée Mallah. Her family is of Spanish descent, but were exiled because of a little something called the Spanish Inquisition. Her father was born in a Sephardic Jewish community in what is now Thessaloniki, Greece. Andrée studied law and three sons, including Nicolas.
4. Who has better style?
Ok, both women dress better than we ever will. Carla tends to be a little more trendy, or naked, but both women tend to stick with simple silhouettes and solid colors, usually with loose hair and light makeup.
So. Whose life rocks harder? Our answer is: God, we’re so jealous of both. But we’ve never had a daydream about Sarkozy (except that one where we’re both at the circus and wearing diapers), so we’re going to go with Letizia.
