Obama’s visit to Mexico is coming at a time when traveling there is arguably the most dangerous it’s ever been. Obama’s own status as a major target and the ongoing drug war mean Obama will be packing some serious protection while he’s there. Just how much? Check out the virtual army guarding his ass:

The facts and figures:

• 3,400 Mexico City police are guarding the perimeter of his movements
• 2,000 federal police are responsible for bomb-detection, air support and special tasks
• 500 elite members of the Mexican Army are specifically tasked with guarding President Calderón and the U.S. envoy
• An unspecified number of American Secret-Service personnel will accompany Obama on his every move as he visits Mexico
• Obama’s famously impregnable personal limo, the “Beast,” will transport him around D.F. and keep him safe with its military-grade titanium/ceramic armor and ballistic windows
• Meanwhile, a truck capable of blocking cellphone signals will follow the President’s convoy.
• Obama will only fly on Air Force One and Marine One, the official Presidential air transports.

The media’s obsession with Obama’s security is communicating to the world exactly how dire the US thinks the situation is- Mexico is already framed as a nation on the brink and this only solidifies that perception in the public imagination.
