Happy April Fool's Day! This shit is seriously our least favorite day of the entire year. For 24 hours, we sit, tense and annoyed, wondering whether someone is going to apply plastic wrap to our toilet or try to convince us that we have a long-lost twin or... something. There are, however, a few well-constructed pranks that rise above the rubble. Check out some of our favorites:
1. Taco Liberty Bell
In 1996, Taco Bell inspired a wave of angry phone calls to the National Historic Park in Philadelphia when it announced that it had bought the Liberty Bell with the intent of renaming it the "Taco Liberty Bell." When asked about the name change, the White House press secretary said the Lincoln Memorial had also been purchased by Ford Motors and would be renamed the "Ford Lincoln Memorial." Zing!
2. Left-Handed Whopper
A 1998 ad in USA Today heralded the debut of a new option from Burger King - the left-handed Whopper. The ad promised that "the new Left-Handed Whopper will have all the condiments rotated 180 degrees, thereby redistributing the weight of the sandwich so that the bulk of them skew to the left." A certain Guanabee editor who happens to be left-handed would have enjoyed such a sandwich with a left-handed bottle of Hatuey.
3. Swiss Spaghetti Harvest
In 1957, a British news show called "Panorama" ran a story about a particularly successful spaghetti harvest in Switzerland thanks, in part, to the "virtual disappearance" of the dreaded spaghetti weevil. The story showed footage of workers pulling strings of spaghetti from trees. The station was subsequently flooded with inquiries as to how one might grow a spaghetti tree of one's own. This is believed to be the first time a television station staged an April Fool's prank. FOX News continues the tradition to this day.
4. Hot-Headed Naked Ice Borer
In 1995, Discover magazine ran a story about the illusive hotheaded naked ice borer, much to the awe and delight of its readers. The creature looked like a cross between a naked mole rate and a seal, with a large bony plate on its head. This bony structure was, according to the article, heated by tiny blood vessels that would render it hot enough to burn through ice in the ice borer's native Antarctica. The biologist who discovered the animal was, tellingly, named "Aprile Pazzo."
