Fu: Texas Lawmaker Betty Brown Wants Asian Names To Be Made Easier
9 April 2009, 1:30 PM. By Alex Alvarez
Texas State Representative Betty Brown believes that the “Wang,” “Ng” and “Lee” families of her great state are messing things up for poll takers and that they should take steps to make their names “easier.” So, was the name that prompted Braun Browne Brown to make this statement something like “Pibulsonggram” or “Chandrasekaran?” Close! It was “Ko.”
Brown made her comments at a discussion on voter identification legislation during which Ramey Ko, a representative of the Organization of Chinese Americans, spoke about changes that people of Chinese, Korean and Japanese descent sometimes make to their names - like, perhaps, “Lee” versus “Li.”
Brown responded to Ko by saying:
Can’t you see that this is something that would make it a lot easier for you and the people who are poll workers if you could adopt a name just for identification purposes that’s easier for Americans to deal with?
Democrats in the state have demanded an apology from Brown, who apparently believes all Americans are named Smith. Or is that Smyth? Smithe? God, why can’t people just make a decision!

ugh so annoying when people think my last name is my first name or when they pronounce it wrong.
Ugh. It would be a representative from North Texas who would say that.
I’m sorry ya’ll.
I apologize, too. This is embarrassing for those of us in the North Texas area. Betty Brown can suck it!
