Mexican Hater, Socialite Betsy Perry Resigns From NYC Commission for Women’s Issues

Betsy Perry, the Upper East Side socialite who wrote an inflammatory and–we’ll just say it–mean blog post about Mexicans on the Huffington Post last week, has resigned from her mayoral appointed position on the New York City Commission for Women’s Issues amid pressures from New York City Comptroller Bill Thompson–who is running for mayor against the incumbent Michael Bloomberg. Hours before a Thompson-led protest outside the Mexican consulate in NYC began, a letter Perry wrote to First Deputy Mayor Patti Harris on Monday was released.
Rather than become a distraction to Mayor Bloomberg, I think it best if I resign from the Women’s Commission. I have enjoyed the work and the many fine friends I made and continue to be a great fan of the mayor’s and the wonderful work he has done for our city.
Thompson isn’t letting this go, though, without using it to make his political rival look bad. Here’s the awkward video of he and his supporters who were eager to yell, “Si se puede,” even though their thunder had just been stolen by Perry’s resignation.
Mayor Bloomberg really should have called for Perry’s resignation. If she had said such xenophobic things about African-Americans or Africa, there would be no question in his mind, but the Mayor knew that if he fired Perry over this, he risked looking like an illegal-immigrant sympathizer which could cause him more votes in the long run. Ay, ay, ay.
