picture-14The Padre Alberto Cutie photo scandal has made it all the way to CNN. CNN Español (”you guys”) correspondent Carlos Montero (or “Montiero”) stopped by to explain why the loin-cloth adorned natives are shaking their spears in outrage over the priest and TV personality’s affair with a young woman.

When asked if Father Cutie has been fired from his show, Montero explained that the popular priest has been “given time to meditate.” Montero also addresses speculation that the photos might include a “trick” of some sort. We, for one, think she seems like a very nice lady:

Father Cutie’s “meditation” also includes a break from his duties as the head of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Miami Beach. He has issued an apology in the hopes of garnering forgiveness from his fans and congregation:

Before God — full of love and mercy - I ask for the forgiveness of those who may be hurt or saddened by my actions. Since I entered the seminary at the age of 18, the priesthood has brought me great joy.

The commitment that I made to serve God will remain intact. I am grateful for the love and support I have received today from so many in our community, especially my parishioners and the supporters of the radio stations who have demonstrated great compassion and understanding toward me as a human being.

I ask for your continued prayers and support.

Speaking of the “you guys,” Guanabee commenters have had mixed reactions to this story, with some blaming the Catholic Church’s policies on celibacy for El Crimen de Padre Alberto:

creo que la misma iglesia tiene la culpa de esto,la iglesia debe permitir que los curas se casen y tengan familia,si esto es asi pudieramos tener mas religiosos. Tenemos que orar mucho por El y no jusgar por favor!!

And some people are all, like, “High five, bro! Archbishop Favarola is just a playa hata:”

you go padre alberto!! nice going, why not?
and to Favarola, sir, the days of the inquisition are over, if it was up to you you put father alberto in the rack just for liking a girl,

Totally.

I’m an ex-priest. That weird & unnatural required celibacy was my nemesis.I empathize 100% with Alberto (& the MANY priests I’ve known who secretly had (& still have) intimate/sexual relations with single &/or married women. Alberto get real! Say good-bye to all that religious CRAP….

Time for the ancient church to listen to the voice of the spirit and of the people. Celibacy should be voluntary…..ordain a femaie clergy…our churches will be filled and the church will again be a living vibrant community.

The Catholic Church bases her mandate of priestly celibacy on the example of Jesus Christ in His own life. Catholic men are not forced to be priests in the Catholic Church. It is a choice one makes for the love of God. It is a calling or vocation. “Many are called but few are chosen” Those chosen to the priesthood, willingly and lovingly sacrifice having a wife and biological children and worldly possessions so that they can fully give themselves to God in the service of His Church and God’s people.

The duty of a husband is firstly to his wife and children. If husbands and wives are faithful and mutually love and sacrifice for each other there would not be so many divorces. The duty of a Catholic priest is to give God to the world and to take the world up to God by his life of sacrificial prayer and works. He is called to be a spiritual father of many and faithful to his spouse the Church.
Ordained priests are chosen from among men of faith who live and intend to remain celibate “for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Called to consecrate themselves for life, with an undivided and joyous heart to God and his ministry, they sacrifice that which is good, choosing celibacy as a sign of new life to serve God’s people. There is a direct connection that exists between Christ and the priest. A priest’s chaste celibate love for the church is a sign of Christ’s presence to the faithful. He makes Christ present through his sacramental ministry at the altar and in the confessional and is acting, not simply in the name of Christ, but in the person of Christ…he is “another Christ”, whose total gift of self to the church as spouse, is an integral part of his priestly life making him a spiritual father to countless souls.
Father Cutie’s problems started not when he met a woman, but when he forgot that as a priest his first obligation is union with God through constant prayer, sacrifice and obedience. “Thou art a priest forever…”
