tijuanaFour Latino tourists to Mexico were found stabbed, beaten and strangled in a van in Tijuana. The four young people -  Brianna Hernandez, 19; Carmen Jimena Ramos, thought to be around 20 although it is yet to be confirmed; Oscar Jorge Garcia, 23; and Luis Antonio Gomez III, 21 - were all from San Diego and Chula Vista and had spent Thursday night in Mexico going to various clubs. They were reported missing on Friday when none of the four answered cell phone calls from concerned relatives.

Family members of one of the victims said they knew drug traffickers and one of the female victims was found to have cocaine in her system.

Back in March of this year, the Tijuana Convention and Visitors Bureau tried to assure travelers that the city was safe to visit and invited tourists to celebrate Tijuana’s 120th birthday. Some pointed out that, even though Tijuana has its fair share of violent crime tied to ongoing drug wars, tourists are not typically victims. Of course, we’d argue drunk Americans pumped full of cheap prescription drugs and a sense of immortality have other kinds of crime to worry about when traveling to Tijuana, but whatevs. We’re not trying to get you to stay at our hotel, like hotel manager and secretary of the Tijuana Convention and Visitors Bureau, Gerard Delgado:

The question is, ‘Is it safe to go to Tijuana?’ We should answer, visitors are absolutely safe, and now’s the time to try Tijuana again. Especially for day-trippers who want to to come down and enjoy themselves for a great day of fun, entertainment and arts, and great bargains.

Any tips on staying safe when traveling to Mexico? Other than not blindly trusting hotel managers?

  1. People often get in trouble (not just in Mexico) because the do dumb shit while abroad that they would not dream of doing when at home. Like getting all jacked up on vicodin and vodka and going with some skeevy guys they just met who know “a really great party”. That said - I am sorry these kids died.

I do dumb stuff all the time while at home so its ok for me to do it when I’m in other countries. Also.

What happened is really sad but why would anyone want to go to Tijuana?

    • I’ve been to Tijuana many times and even walking around at 4am by myself NOTHING has ever happened to me. Tourist are generally fine and there is lots of fun to be had especially when you don’t do the touristy things. And for the commenter above who’s obviously never been, Tijuana has a great thriving art & music scene plus some of the best food ever. Obviously you’ll never know: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/08/arts/design/08bord.html

They were in Tijuana on business… illegal business apparently, according to all Mexican news reports. At least one of these people had a criminal record in both Mexico and in the United States for smuggling and narcotics trafficking.

TJ during the day and early evening is wonderful!

If you stay into the night, don’t be a fucking idiot and you should be fine.

  7. So when Chicanos (assuming they are of Mexican descent since they are from Chula Vista) get killed in TJ, they are Americans, but if they got killed in Chula Vista or anywhere else in the States, they are latino, hispanic, chicano, brown and so on…fuck that.
