Gael Garcia Bernal Sounds Like A Turd In Paper Magazine

paper_gael_cover1Paper magazine had an interview with Rudo y Cursi star Gael Garcia Bernal and if there’s one thing we’ve learned from it, it’s that Paper magazine has a huge, throbbing boner for Gael.

And, you know. The two kind of deserve each other. We’ll stick to “El Crimen de Padre Alberto” from now on. Like, seriously, check this out:

His gaze is unsettlingly direct, and his beatific smile disarming. He possesses an easy, twinkle-eyed wisdom that recalls old men in rocking chairs, and his well-fermented philosophies on life, love and existentialism are dispensed with humor. Even the smallest mundanities are ripe with meta-meaning for Bernal - take his boots, for example. “Are they by a designer?” I ask. “For me, there’s no such thing as ‘designer’ and ‘not designer,’” is his reply. “Boots are boots.” Ah, of course.

Ah, our brain just vomited into our heart. And it continues:

A truly well-crafted boot, according to Bernal, is up there with 2001: A Space Odyssey. “Every boot tells a story, some of them better than others - and it’s the same for film,” he says. “There is no difference between filmmaking and boot-making - either of them can result in art.”

We’ll wager there are about 100% less self-important assholes working in the boot-making industry, though. Gael goes on to say that while he loves his homeland of Mexico, the best decision he’s made was to leave it.

Probably so that he could buy designer boots on Rodeo Drive or whatever.

I don’t completely agree with David Denby (he’s wrong about a lot of things), but I think this post is an example of what he considers problematic about snark. This post is downright horrible. Yes, this particular interview is not very good. But your reaction to it is absurd.

Wow you guys are meanies. I wrote this story for Paper and found Gael to be affable, intelligent and thoughtful in his responses. I’m sorry some of you guys feel so much negativity toward him–personally, my GGB boner remains stiff and proud as ever. Love and boots–Caroline
