guanabee-glossary-5.20.09If you’ve ever asked a Mexican whether it’s cold enough for a chaqueta or asked a Cuban to pass a bollo at dinner, you’ll know that Latino slang terms can vary from country to country, region to region, generation to generation, a  reality that often results in embarrassing situations. Guanabee Glossary is our attempt to teach you Latino slang and save you from looking like a weird-ass fool in mixed company. Enjoy it, cabrones.

gil

[guheel] noun

Used primarily in Argentina, although also a familiar term  in Chile,  gil refers to a person who is stupid, or an asshole. A “gilada” refers to an event or practice that is stupid or silly.

No reconociste a Jackie Guerra, la Oprah Mexicana? Eres una gil.

You didn’t recognize Jackie Guerra, the Mexican Oprah? You are such a silly girl.

El Show de Tyra nunca tiene nada que ver con nada. Es una gilada.

The Tyra Banks Show never has anything to do with anything. It’s a mockery.
