jw_lown_5.22.09San Angelo Mayor J.W. Lown has announced that he will step down from his position effective immediately because he has been busily pursuing other positions - specifically with a Mexican man who does not have legal status in the United States.

Lown announced his resignation via telephone from Mexico, where he has dual citizenship. Addressing concerns that he might have done this so abruptly because he is in some sort of danger, Lown emphasized that he is safe and staying at a hotel in an undisclosed city. Lown says that he and he is partner are staying in Mexico until they can get a visa that would allow them to return to the United States legally. He expressed an interested in returning to San Angelo with his partner once that happens.

Said Lown of his decision:

I made the final decision when I knew it was the right decision to make for me and my partner and our future — and for the community.

I did the best I could. I had to get down here and get everything in order to make a life for myself. I didn’t make this decision lightly. I have to give this a chance.

Lown’s resignation comes a mere 10 days after he was elected mayor with 89.34% of the vote.

Somewhere, Anderson Cooper is staring at himself in the mirror, fingering a half-eaten package of pica fresas, and shedding a single tear. “Someday,” he whispers to his reflection, “some sweet day-ay. Oh. We’ll be together. (Yes we will, yes we will.)”

I met JW professionally many years ago and I can attest that he is a standup guy. He is half Mexicano and identifies as such. The fact that is resigned because he fell in love with a peer and not anything scandalous is extremely sad.

JW has been an awesome mayor. Just look at his reelection numbers. He was also a very successful Peace Corps Volunteer in Bolivia, where he was much loved. I will be sad to see him go.

I’m posting this as a guest not because I don’t want to be open, but because I want to respect JWs privacy.
