Every mouthbreather on the internet got their panties in a wad today when they mistook Sonia Sotomayor's membership in National Council of La Raza, listed on theAmerican Bar Association website, with a membership in La Raza Unida, a political party that is kinda radical, brown and proud. First of all the word "raza" is used by a lot of Latinos in this country. It means race, which technically, is a misnomer since Hispanic or Latino is not a race, but give us a break. Most of us were not in college when the term was made common in the 1960's. Now, the difference between National Council of La Raza and La Raza Unida. Allow us to break it down for you:

The National Council of La Raza (NCLR)

nclr National Council of La Raza is essentially the Latino NAACP. If you are a conservative, you probably hate that, too, but then you probably oppose affirmative action and are slightly racist yourself. NCLR was co-founded with the help of young, Mexican-American activists in Washington D.C. and the Ford Foundation. Yes, rich, white people!  The Ford Foundation funded a study at UCLA--the first of its kind--to learn what obstacles stood in the way of Mexican-Americans getting education and advancing in the United States. The NCLR was eventually formed from that need. Its stated focus is on reducing poverty and discrimination, and improving opportunities for Hispanics. NCLR has grown to nearly 300 community-based organizations nationwide and is "the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States" serving, "all Hispanic subgroups in all regions of the country." NCLR continues to receive funding from the Ford Foundation and corporations such as Citigroup and Wal-Mart. The NCLR is headquartered in Washington, D.C. and maintains eight regional offices in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, Sacramento, San Antonio, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The current president is Janet Murguía.

La Raza Unida

raza La Raza Unida is a political party founded in Texas in the late 1960's and early 1970's by angry, brown Chicano types who contend that the mythical land of "Atzlan," (which consists of the Southwestern United States), was stolen from Mexico by the United States. La Raza Unida was the first third party to be formed in the United States around ethnic lines. It sought better housing, job, and educational opportunities for Mexican-Americans. "La Raza Unida" literally translates as "The United Race."  Update: National Council For La Raza (the one Sonia Sotomayor belongs to) has issued a public explanation of who they are and why people like CNN and Rick Sanchez are sell-outs for not clarifiying this shit when Tom Tancredo went on television yesterday to make up lies about them.

And LULAC... well, that's just the meetings your abuelita goes to in order to get all the good gossip that's too racy for church.
