Latinos And Guanabees At The Met Costume Institute Gala: The Good, The Bad, The Madonna
5 May 2009, 9:45 AM. By Alex Alvarez
The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala was last night. Oh, gosh, you mean you missed it? Well, have no fear, we’ll take you through the good, the bad and the truly heinous and frightening fashions on display at last night’s event.
We’ll start with Madonna, lest she be the absurdly-dressed elephant sauntering around the room in unflattering fetish boots. This was a woman who, albeit with the help of stylists and fashion designers, set trends. From her fingerless lace gloves to her platinum curls to her cone bra, what Madonna wore immediately made headlines for being edgy, innovative and different. She’s still making headlines only, now, it’s out of fear that Lourdes may not be able to hold her down long enough to tie the straps to her brand-new jacket.
For the gala, Madonna wore something that seemed to reference her earliest looks. You remember, right?

But her resulting look was less youthful, rebellious and Desperately Seeking Susan, and more …well. Just desperate. It was some combination of a saloon maid, space hooker and overgrown woman-child on methadone. Which is a brilliant look, if done correctly and not worn while a self-satisfied smirk.
Then there was Rihanna. We loved, loved, loved her outfit. She was among a handful of female stars - model Twiggy included - her ditched the flowing gowns and opted for tailored tuxedos instead. She also showed off a burgeoning trend - exaggerated shoulders - in a way that didn’t look too retro or dated. Unlike some people. We only wish she’d have toned down on the highlights and eye makeup and let her silhouette speak for itself.

So what’d you all think of the (mostly heinous) fashions on display last night? And are we crazy for being in love with Rihanna’s outfit?
