Nimzay Aponte, Another Woman Murdered Due To Online Hookup Gone Awry
15 May 2009, 1:30 PM. By Alex Alvarez
Nimzay Aponte, a 23-year-old woman from the Bronx, was stabbed to death in a park after scorning the advances of 35-year-old Raymond Dennis, a man she had met through online dating site LocalHookupz.com. Aponte and Dennis, who went by the name “Mike” online, chatted for a bit before Aponte determined that he was, according to her roommate “a crackhead” and that she wanted nothing to do with him.
On Monday, Dennis tracked Aponte down at a job fair she attended in the Bronx, where he found her conversing with several people. He reportedly yelled, angrily, “Isn’t this lovely? What’s this? Some kind of double date?” before leaving. The next day, Dennis showed up at St. Mary’s Park in the Bronx where he found Aponte sitting on a bench with a male friend. Dennis snuck up behind the couple and stabbed them both, screaming, ”I told you not to lie!” Aponte’s friend survived the attack, but she died at a nearby hospital. She managed, however, to give police her attacker’s screen name before passing away.
Dennis is a convicted drug dealer with over a dozen arrests to his name as well as a restraining order put out by his ex-wife after he threatened to “take [her] off this Earth.”
We’re worried for young women (and men) like Nimzay who don’t take certain precautions when looking for people for hook up with online. And we do specifically mean hooking up, not dating. Sites like LocalHookupz serve as an easy way for people to flirt online, exchange pictures (and personal information) and meet up IRL. Which is fine, except for the nagging suspicion we have that sites that focus on hooking up might help bolster the idea that certain people are disposable or only good as a means of receiving sexual gratification.

A quick look through LocalHookupz (which has been reported elsewhere as “Local-Hookupz”), shows a veritable meat market of minorities, especially women, with names that either play on their ethnicity - like “Chinkstah_Hunnie” and “SeXyChuLa4U” - or their physical attributes - “ iG0TdemLiipz” and “APPLE_BOTTOM18″ - or on their sexual availability, with a focus on providing pleasure for the other person - as is the case for “MsSwaLLoWs” and the ever-subtle Mr. “make_U_cum.” If you’re going to be sexually explicit and market yourself as a sexually available, readily exploited sexy mamiangelbaby (which is your prerogative, despite our mixed feelings on the subject), then at least make an effort to join sites that screen members in some way, or avoid giving out personal information. If you meet someone for sex, try and organize a preliminary meet-up in a public place in a neighborhood you’re familiar with. Let people know you’re going out with a stranger and what time you intend to be back. Do not invite this person into your home - get a motel, have a quickie in a bar bathroom, whatever. If you want to invite a stranger into your body, do not assume this means you can invite him or her into your life.
