Padre Alberto Sounds Pretty Cocky On Univision

We caught part four of “Confessiones De Padre Alberto” on Univision last night and, is it us, or does Padre Alberto Cutié sound kind of cocky about his transgressions with girlfriend Ruhama Canellis? In the below video, Univision’s Teresa Rodriguez tells Padre Alberto that some would compare what he did with Canellis to a married man having an affair with another woman. Only in this case, it’s the Church that’s his wife. Padre Alberto responds:

I accepted that for a long time, but I don’t accept it today. And I’ll tell you why. [Ed: Because you got caught?] God created man for woman. I mean, it’s very beautiful and romantic to say a man can marry the Church, but I’m going to tell you the truth. The apostles were married. The first Pope was married. For many centuries the apostles got married. The entire Oriental Eastern Rite Catholic Church, underneath the Pope, has priests who marry. 

And if that’s not enough to convince you, don’t forget how long it’s been since he took his vow of celibacy.

If you would have asked me when I was getting ordained at 25 if I’d end up in this situation, I would have said, ‘No way.’ But a man of 25 looks at life very differently than a man of forty.

Oh, okay, so anyone who got married at 25, it’s cool if you cheat 15 years later since you didn’t know how you were going to feel at forty. Look, don’t get us wrong. We totally believe that priests should be allowed to marry, but it’s one thing coming from us and another thing coming from the guy who took a vow. A guy who allegedly believes in the tenets of the Church so deeply that he decided to devote his life to it and write a book on it that has made tons of money off of blind followers. This sounds like a bunch of rationalizing from a guy who got caught.The exact same excuses you hear from a married guy who gets caught cheating and says it’s because his wife got fat or she never touches him. In the end, he’s not sorry about what he did because he knows he’ll be happier with the younger, sexier broad. We mean, check out the smirk on his face as he tells Teresa that it was worth getting caught.
