Gluttonous Dairy Enthusiasts Rejoice: Queso Fresco May Help Fight Obesity

cheesLatino dairy companies are keen to jump on the “eat dairy, lose weight” diet trend and are hoping to market queso fresco - popular in Mexican and South American cooking - as a weight-loss friendly “Hispanic” cheese. But you can’t make medianoche with queso fresco, now can you.

Recent studies have shown that adults who regularly consumed the recommended daily intake of calcium from dairy products in addition to a low-calorie diet typically lost more weight and body fat than adult who simply watched their calorie intake. No word on the horrific dairy farts experienced by lactose-intolerant Latinos in the process.

Oh, hey, Latinos make cheese! And sometimes they buy and eat cheese! What a perfect way for a Latino company to hop on a trend. Explains Elizabeth Castro, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at the Castro Cheese Company in Texas:

Queso Fresco contains less calories, fat and cholesterol than other cheeses such as Cheddar, Mozzarella, or processed cheese products like Velveeta(R) while providing the recommended daily calcium intake. It’s an excellent option for those who want or need to reduce weight.

There’s great interest in exploring the benefits of Hispanic cheeses because of obesity problems that children and adults face.

That doesn’t mean we will stop dipping deep-fried butter sticks into tubs of Velveeta, though. But, yes, it’s probably best to drink reduced fat milk and other low-calorie dairy products like queso fresco, cottage cheese and yoghurt. Touting the health benefits of cheese, particularly cheese consumed by Latinos, is a wise marketing move. We’re well aware of the numerous studies letting us know that Latinos in the U.S. are overwhelmingly obese, pregnant and suicidal, so addressing the possible weight loss and health benefits of something many Latinos were eating anyway is a good idea. Not that the Latino dairy industry really needs the boost -production of Latino cheeses in the U.S. rose 183% percent from 1996 to 2008.

  1. Surprising amounts of queso fresco are smuggled into the US SW from Mexico. It’s always delicious but often made from unpasturized milk. Making the Latinos who consume it sick as well as overwhelmingly obese, pregnant and suicidal.

  3. unpasturized smuggled trunk cheese = deelish. This article makes me want to go get down on some pronto style, NUMS!!

    • There’s lots of shady characters and lots of dirty deals
Every name’s an alias in case somebody squeals
It’s the lure of dirty QUESO, it’s got a very strong appeal
Perhaps you’d understand it better standing in my shoes
It’s the ultimate enticement, it’s the (cheese) smugglers’ blues
