It used to be that our gay prom stories had to do with some gay not being able to take his or her same-sex date to the dance, but today we learn that eighteen year-old Sergio Garcia was elected Prom Queen Saturday at Fairfax High in Los Angeles, California. Prop 8 may have been upheld, but these kids give us hope for the future.

In a scene right out of a John Hughes film, Garcia gave a speech to his classmates days before the dance:

At one time, prom may have been a big popularity contest where the best-looking guy or girl were crowned king and queen. Things have changed and it’s no longer just about who has the most friends or who wears the coolest clothes. Sure, I’m not your typical prom queen candidate. There’s more to me than meets the eye. I will be wearing a suit, but don’t be fooled, deep down I am a queen.”

This is where, in our school, he would have been expelled and then severely beaten behind the gym. Not so at Fairfax High. ”It just shows how open-minded our class is,” said Vanessa Lo, 18, the school’s senior class president. Lo said initially she was against the idea, but Garcia’s speech won her over. Are these kids for real? Good for them. Let cynicism die with Gen X.

“His speech was great,” said senior Unique Payne whose name is awesome. She voted for Garcia. “I did it because I support the gay community.”

But, of course, some guy was all threatened. “I’m not really happy about that. He should’ve run for prom king,” 17-year-old senior Juan Espinoza said, qualifying his statement by saying that the other kids just wanted to see the spectacle of two guys dancing together. Damn right. Two guys and one of them a queen.
