The Anti-Obama Video That Likens The Congressional Hispanic Caucus To Terrorists
4 May 2009, 6:00 PM. By Cindy Casares
Everyone is in a tizzy over a new ad released by Republican House Minority Leader John Boehner last week entitled, “Do You Feel Safer?” The video, meant to question President Barack Obama’s security tactics, or lack thereof depending on how you see it, features multiple images of Al-Qaeda, Guantanamo, the Pentagon in flames and then the President meeting with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Needle scratch.
“Are House Republicans saying that Americans should be afraid of Latino leaders,” asked MSNBC’s Ed Schulz today. Boehner spokesman Michael Steel responded by saying the complaint is silly, pointing out that the President also appears in the video speaking at the House Democratic Retreat in Virginia. “Is the Congressional Hispanic Caucus suggesting that every Democrat in the House is connected with terrorists?”
Let’s analyze those last images. Or, actually, let The Hill’s Jared Allen do it for us:
Toward the end of the video, a silent question asks, “After 100 days… Do you feel safer?,” between which a flurry of images flash across the screen – some for a few moments longer than the others.
One of those images is of President Obama meeting with the Hispanic Caucus at the White House. The other images include Obama bowing before the King of Saudi Arabia, speaking before the entire House Democratic Caucus, laughing at a podium with Vice President Joe Biden, slapping hands with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, a group of apparent jihadists burning an American flag, an explosion, a hooded man with a rocket launcher, and an image of the Pentagon from Sept. 11.
We’ll also add that throughout that final montage, there are three images that slow down for you to study them. The image of Obama bowing before the King of Saudi Arabia, the image of him shaking Hugo Chavez’s hand and the image of him sitting down with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Sounds to us like Boehner is saying that fraternizing with Hispanics is like sleeping with the enemy.
