This Day In Latino History
25 May 2009, 9:41 AM. By Cindy Casares

On this day in 1812, an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale destroyed the Venezuelan city of Caracas. An estimated fifteen to twenty thousand people were killed as well as immeasurable damage to property. The quake was so severe that, in the zone of Valecillo, a new lake was formed and the river Yurubí was dammed up. Numerous rivulets changed their course in the valley of Caracas, which was flooded with dirty water.
And on this day in 1085, Alfonso VI of León and Castile took Toledo, Spain back from the Moors in what is now known as the reconquest. This victory brought the Catholic Church closer to control in Hispania and set the region back on the road to Europeanization after several hundred years of Moorish rule. Yeah, not sure how to feel about that one.
