This Day In Latino History
26 May 2009, 9:05 AM. By Cindy Casares
On this day in 1994, king of pop and lord of freaky deaky Michael Jackson wed Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis, in a secret ceremony in the Dominican Republic that probably included chicken’s blood and, hopefully, a Dominican Elvis Presley impersonator. The marriage was balked at by practically everyone and behooved them to appear on Primetime Live to explain themselves to Diane Sawyer. “Why wouldn’t we have a lot in common?” Lisa Marie begged. Two years later, they were divorced.
And in 2002, Álvaro Uribe was elected President of Colombia for the first time. Uribe is still serving as President under his second term. During his administration, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) have suffered a series of military defeats, including the safe rescue of Ingrid Betancourt, and the main paramilitary groups have gone through a demobililization process.
