new_mexico_boy_toribioBefore New Mexico police discovered Tiffany Toribio had suffocated her young son and left him partially buried in a local park, the little boy - known then as “Baby John Doe” - brought his community together as they mourned a child they never knew.

Residents of Alvarado took to leaving stuffed animals, flowers and toy trucks at the park where the boy was found and organized a fundraiser to pay for the child’s funeral. A preliminary autopsy determined only that the nameless 38 pound, 3 foot 2 child was “either Native American or Hispanic.”

The boy’s mother, 23-year-old Tiffany Toribio, has since been named as the 3-year-old’s possible killer. Toribio was arrested on charges of “murder, child abuse resulting in death, tampering with evidence and negligent child abuse resulting in death or great bodily harm.” Toribio told police that she had taken her son, Ty, to Alvarado Park, where she smothered his face with her hand until he suffocated.

Toribio turned herself in to authorities after an image of her son was displayed across local television.

We have to admit we’re touched that the community would reach out to a child, especially given missing or murdered children who aren’t blonde, blue-eyed, and smiling angelically in their family photos are rarely given the care and attention their cases merit.
