desoto_archuletaOn this day in 1542, Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto died while searching for gold along the Mississippi River. De Soto was the first European to explore Florida. Yeah, thanks for that Hernan. If it weren’t for you, we might not have Hooters or Latarian Milton. De Soto told local natives he was an immortal sun god so that they would submit without conflict, so when he died, his men had to hide it. Which must have been a veritable Weekend at Bernies. They hid his corpse in blankets weighted with sand and sank it in the middle of the Mississippi River during the night. (Okay, maybe more like The Sopranos.) But the Native Americans were all, uh-huh. Yeah, right.

And in 2008, our little lambchop, David Archuleta, lost BIG TIME to David Cook on American Idol. But who got all the love, eh, eh?
