Casteando: Casting Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland With Latinos
22 June 2009, 11:59 AM. By Alex Alvarez
We have pretty much been looking forward to Tim Burton creating a film adaptation of Alice Adventure’s in Wonderland / Through the Looking Glass since we were able to figure out since his movies and those books comprised a few of our favorite things. (We were about 8 at the time - our taste has remained fairly consistent since then. Sigh.) So, it’s interesting to us to think about what Latino actors we’d like to see take on these iconic roles.
Take a look at some of our casting choices and feel absolutely free to applaud and agree with each and every one:
- The Mad Hatter

Currently: Johnny Depp
Our Choice: John Leguizamo
We were never really a fan of John Leguizamo’s until we saw his take on Toulouse-Lautrec in Moulin Rouge. We think he could bring that same sort of manic quirkiness to the Mad Hatter. Although, give his grin, he think he could also take on the Cheshire cat.
- The Hookah-Smoking Caterpillar

Currently: Alan Rickman
Our Choice: Antonio Banderas
We think Banderas embodies the perfect mix of elegant and oblivious that it takes to play the caterpillar. Plus, we can totally see him doing a particularly snide delivery of “Whooo Arrrrre Youuuuu?”
- The White Queen

Currently: Anne Hathaway
Our Choice: Ivy Queen
Described as “beautiful but over the top,” we feel the White Queen would best be played by the vision of glamour that is Ivy Queen. Why she isn’t in every film ever, we know not.
- The Red Queen

Currently: Helena Bonham Cater
Our Choice: Rossy de Palma
Ok, we’re particularly pleased with this pick. Spanish actress Rossy de Palma is gorgeous in something of a frightening way and we think she’s perfect for the role of the Red Queen, whose character has been blended somewhat with the Queen of Hearts for the movie.
- Alice

Currently: Mia Wasikowska
Our Choice: Alexis Bledel
Alexis has that innocent, wide-eyed look that would be perfect for Alice. Plus, she’s awfully photogenic.

Ivy wouldn’t even have to be fitted into costumes. She’d show up screen ready.
Alexis… Alice… Alex. Yes, I see where this is going. It is YOU who wants to be Alice, no? And a great choice you’d make what with the innocence and thirst for wonder.
From Abfabdude, As a White Gay boy from Texas, I’d like to second the Rossy De Palma suggestion. I also wish to add Charytin as a potential for the role of White Queen.
