Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has finally signed a bill into law that gives huge chunks of the Amazon rain forest to squatters who’ve been living there illegally for decades. Don’t worry, as a concession to tree huggers, the law states that no companies can take over the land. But what about the yuppies?! They’ll surely fuck it up with their split-level housing, no? Well, acording to Reuters, most of the people who live there are poorer than the dirt that serves as their floors. They were encouraged to occupy the land during the 1964-85 military dictatorship, but then were given no support for development from the government since, technically, it was illegal. Ah, Latin America.

About 166 million acres of the Amazon will likely be sold to people who can prove they’ve lived there since December of 2004. The new landowners will have to pay market value on the land, (which we’re sure they can totally afford), as well as property tax, but they only have to provide a good-faith affadavit to prove they qualify and there will be no on-site checks to verify. This is totally not ripe for the corruption that runs rampant in Latin America!

it is about time that land issue is settled, once and for all. I cannot wait to buy my acreage there, then charge you stupid gringos for the oxygen. you did not know that this area being sold produces like 60% of the world’s oxygen?
