Last weekend at Pachanga Fest in Austin, we got the chance to hear a bluesy Guatemalan lady named Gaby Moreno whose stature belies some serious pipes. Gaby is already making a name for herself in Los Angeles, appearing on KCRW with the late, great Nic Harcourt (he’s not dead, he just left KCRW, may music rest in piece.) and having David Garza play on her first album, Still The Unknown. To describe why we like her, we’ll borrow some words from a fan of hers on iLike, “Asking why I like this song, is like asking why do I like a fireplace in the winter. Why does any like chocolate? Why do you like sugar?” There is an instant comfort that comes from Gaby’s soulful melodies, but rather than read any more about it, take a listen for yourself and find out why we were instant fans. And special thanks to Mashfest for the musical performance footage.
