gisele_bundchen_6.15.09In a photo spread in Photo magazine meant to publicize her truly heinous line of shoes, Gisele is photographed in what appears to be the traditional dress of Brazil’s Bora Indian population. Which, you know. Is really the ideal backdrop to highlight a rich, light-skinned, white privileged woman’s shoe line. Sorry, we mean draw attention to the plight of the Amazon rain forest.

There is a difference between adopting accessories or clothing worn by other cultures because you find them aesthetically pleasing and quite another to use others’ cultures, history, and tradition as a prop or backdrop without thought as to the social and political implications of what you are doing. Especially when the culture from which you are borrowing have been historically marginalized while you, Ms. Bündchen-Brady, have not.

Although, you know, we get that Gisele’s job is not to be well-versed in how to deal with or talk about racism. It’s not her job to be aware of interested. We understand that, totally. But is it too much to ask that, if she portend to act as the ambassador of Brazil in ads and photo shoots, that she do it in an educated manner? What? That is too much to ask? Ok.

So, fine: That headdress makes her head look tiny.
